Meet Kevin & Kyle Powless | Powless Brothers Photography

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin & Kyle Powless and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kevin & Kyle, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Since we were young both Kevin and myself were very into being creative. Art was a passion of ours for a long time before starting in the photography field. Growing up we both loved drawing, painting and crafting, pretty much anything that involved being creative we would do it.
As we began college we tried some drawing classes and didn’t feel that passion anymore but knew we both still wanted to do something in the creative field. We took photography classes in college and thats when it clicked for both of us. Being able to bring out our artistic abilities through photography and create something special that people could cherish for a lifetime is essentially why we chose to start in this industry.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
We are a full service photography and videography company specializing in all areas of commercial and portrait photography! From weddings, families, high school seniors, events and more, we are there to capture every special moment. We have grown not only as photographers over the last 11 years of being in business, but as best friends and twin brothers. We are both very proud how much we have grown in this business together. It’s not an easy thing to do when there is so much competition, but I think what sets us apart is that there is two of us. Kevin and I are both very like minded which makes our creativity stand out in our work. We have of course had to make some challenging adjustments during our time. Kyle has recently moved to the Gull Lake area and has started a second branch of Powless Brothers Photography and does more of the post processing and editing of our photography while Kevin is still running our primary location in Mason working with our clients and capturing photo there. Challenging times definitely take place when one person moves away and you have to figure out how to make it work. We have found a system that works for us and continues to set us apart from everyone else.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Thats a hard question to answer being in two different areas now. Id say if we are in Mason with Kevin, I would take my friends to Bad Brewing for some food and local brews. Then we could go shopping at Michigan Barn Wood and Salvage for some amazing household items and decor. There is a lot of parks near by so we could take the dogs and kids for a walk. Local stops would probably be the highlight of my list.
If I was at Gull Lake with Kyle, I would spend most of the day out on the lake on the boat. There are some really good restaurants on the lake so of course we would hit those as well. Being close to Kalamazoo there are a lot of small craft stores and breweries we would definitely check out as well.
Most of what we love to do is keep it local and help support business like our own. I think thats something you’d want your friends to see as well!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We want to give a huge shout out to both of our families. There are many weekday evenings and weekends where we aren’t home due to photographing events, weddings, families, etc. Our families have to put in the extra effort while we are away, and it doesn’t go unnoticed. We would not be where we are today without the support, encouragement and sacrifice our family gives so we can do what we love to do.
