We had the good fortune of connecting with Lance Pittman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lance, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born and raised in the city of Detroit, growing up on the Northwest side, and am a proud product of the Detroit Public School system, graduating from “Sweet” Henry Ford High, ultimately completing my Master’s degree at Concordia University. My family lived in a two family flat with my grandparents living on the ground level, and my parents along with my brother and sister and I living upstairs for most of my childhood.
My parents and grandparents, worked for the “Big Three” automakers at the time. My parents realized their dream of homeownership just as I was entering high school. My father’s hustle as a young man and my grandfather’s dedication to work and church, were driving factors in helping me to become the man I am today. My father was a Viet Nam vet in the Air Force. I ultimately followed in his footsteps and retired from the Air Force after serving nearly 22 years, traveling all over the world to Africa, Japan, Korea and the Philippines. I speak, Japanese, Korean and Tagalog, and 3 of my children were born in Japan. Japan is were my Christian ministry began.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
After traveling and ministering all over the world, our hearts desire was to come back home to Michigan and start a church. Our intention has always been to reach our family with the great gospel message. Our church First Praise Pentecostal, is a church with a focus on the community. We pride ourselves on getting outside of the 4 walls of the church as we take it to the streets! We find great joy in praying for people outside in the open. We often supply free food and gas to the community we serve. Whether it’s packing special food baskets for Thanksgiving or our work with “Toys for Tots” during Christmas, our success lies in how we reach back out to the community we serve. It hasn’t always been easy, but with God’s help and groups like “Arise Detroit” (an outreach team from our mother church) and others, we are where we are today. We are the sum total of others who have poured into us and also because of the divine province of the Lord God above. It is because of his mercies that we are not consumed! The Lord’s compassion never fails! Without God, and the people of God, none of what we have accomplished would be possible. Our goal is to be Consistent in all things God, whether church, bible study or prayer, We also want to be Committed Christians, Consecrated to Christ.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When we have out of town guests, I take them to see our Detroit neighborhoods. Our strength lies within the community! We take the Q-Line rail from the top of West Grand Blvd, down Woodward to the riverfront as I explain attractions along the way. There’s nothing like a great meal at the Joe Louis Southern Kitchen in midtown Detroit or Beans and Cornbread in Southfield. The resurgence of Detroit’s downtown is impeccable! There are so many things to do and see in and around the city.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wife Dionne Marie has been by my side as we have been married for almost 39 years.

There have been so many mentors in my life, I am the pastor and preacher that I am today because of men like Bishop William L. Bonner and Bishop Harold Hoffman.

My children, Lance Jr (who passed away recently), Landyn, Shawnique, Shacai and Lebrandon have all inspired me to strive always for my best!
