Meet Larissa Surline | Tattoo Artist and owner of The Mystical Womb

We had the good fortune of connecting with Larissa Surline and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Larissa, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
After I created and published my first book, which is a cycle charting journal and guide to menstrual cycle/moon cycle wisdom, I had a lot more ideas coming to me for things I could do to expand on this genre. More people are becoming open to talking about and exploring fertility and the menstrual cycle, and I want to be a part of empowering women and people who have a cycle, to be open about their bodies and their needs. I do not have a background in business education, but since I knew I would never quit this journey, I had to officially put the gears in motion to start my own business, The Mystical Womb. The amount of ideas I have and the passion I have for helping others discover their cyclical wisdom made it feel like it was just meant to be. I know I have so much to offer, and the drive to educate and empower, and that will never go away.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
For my Mystical Womb art, I like to showcase the female reproductive system in a creative and beautiful way, in a way that supports symbolism of the ancient wisdom of the menstrual cycle. And I also like most of my creations to carry a feeling of elegance, or embracing goddess energy. One of my most popular designs is “Persephone’s Pomegranate”, which depicts the connection of pomegranates to fertility, and the story of the goddess Demeter and her daughter Persephone.
I love having the freedom showcase all this work in my personal tattoo booth, where I get all kinds of curious clients and the opportunity to spark up a discussion.
When I first started my journey as an artist, I never dreamed I would be too successful because of the idea of a “starving artist”. I just had faith in my talent, and a lot of very encouraging friends and family along the way. I worked hard, and I still work hard, because I never want to stop learning and growing. And that’s how I help myself maintain success even when things are discouraging and difficult.
Learning to practice what I preach is one of my tools in helping others with womb wisdom. I keep close track of my cycle every single day, and what each “season” or phase of it teaches me. Living cyclically like this has taught me to have grace with myself when my energy is down, or learn to ride the wave when my energy levels are at their best, and it helps me organize my life more efficiently or not beat myself up over the times that I simply cannot do what I “should be doing”.
Our bodies need different things at different times, and it is a beneficial experience to discover what those needs are, embrace your cyclical moods and learn those things about yourself. Sometimes we need to drop expectations and go with the flow in a more natural state. That’s what I am here to help others explore.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The Port Huron area is full of hidden gems, places to eat and visit. There are usually events happening on the weekends in the summer, downtown and along the water like art fairs, festivals, and concerts. Port Huron is also close to Marine City and St Clair which also have a lot of waterfront activities and restaurants. Just a simple walk along the boardwalk is a fulfilling activity. We also have the Port Huron Museum, Thomas Edison Depot, and the Huron Lighthouse Museum.
We have a couple beaches, and one of them, Lakeside Beach, is located right by one of my personal favorite stores, Moongate Metaphysical, where you can actually find some of my Mystical Womb products for sale! If you explore more of downtown Port Huron, there are so many unique shops like Everything Classic Antiques, Lounies Soap Co., and Dot’s Candy Bar.
Restaurants here are plentiful but I would never miss a chance to grab something from The Raven Cafe, better yet sit down and enjoy the ambience and incredible atmosphere it offers. Smoke On The Water is another personal favorite, they have the absolute best comfort food.
Before you leave Port Huron, go scratch the itch to get that impromptu tattoo or piercing at none other than Sarenity Tattoo in Fort Gratiot, voted best Tattoo Shop in the Blue Water Area 2 years in a row!
One more mention although there are so many more worth talking about, is Artiques of Lexington. If you continue a little north of Port Huron and Fort Gratiot, you’ll find this amazing shop with fantastic artwork and custom blown glass.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shout out is for Jonathon Anderson, my tattoo mentor, and the owner of Sarenity Tattoo. His never ending support has helped get me to where I am today. He set me up for success in the tattoo industry, and since I started The Mystical Womb, he’s gone out of his way many times to support me and provide opportunities to grow my business.
