We had the good fortune of connecting with Madison Crider and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Madison, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?

To give some backstory, I started a slime business around the summer of 2021 because I had always enjoyed making slime. But more importantly, I always enjoyed the business of matters. As a kid, I made fake contracts and “legal” documents for absolutely no reason. I always liked inventing as well, hence my pursuit of robotics, and that is what drove me to make a slime business, with my mother’s help. While I did decently well for a 13-year-old making slime with a stand mixer and a dream while posting videos to Instagram and TikTok, I eventually lost the motivation. I grew older and got embarrassed by saying I ran a slime business. Fast forward 3 years later, I started learning how to crochet. I enjoyed the process of making something and being able to watch with my own eyes my goals coming to life. I crocheted so much that I started to crochet at school and then I offered to crochet roses for my school’s graduating class. Along the way, people would ask me to make them something and say, “You need to start selling these!”. I decided I might as well because I enjoyed making things for others, it has become a standard of mine to crochet a birthday gift to others an animal of their favorite color. I am still in the process of officially launching my business, and it will be completely finished by the end of March, but I recently sold at the West Bloomfield Black Expo and have a few new customers and others waiting for the official launch.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Ever since I was in middle school, I knew I loved filmmaking. I always chose the option to make a video for a project, or I made videos with my cats and edited them with the knowledge I learned from making a news show in my class. I changed the whole trajectory of my life choosing to pursue filmmaking in high school as I used to do robotics for 5-6 years of my life and wanted to be an engineer. Today, I have taken several classes in videography, film history, and more which has fueled my passion even more to accomplish what I have done. I have taken advantage of the opportunity given to me to start my career early, different from other people my age, I can learn full-time how to enhance my skills and knowledge in the industry and I have made films I am proud of creating from the beginning to end and have enjoyed every moment of it. With everything else I have to do in my life by going to high school as well as other classes I need to study for, it was partially difficult being able to manage my time to accomplish my goals while focusing on my studies. Realizing that nothing is stopping me from doing both and even more helped me achieve the success I have today.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in West Bloomfield but go to school in Farmington Hills and spend most of my time in that city which is what I am most familiar with. I love K-Pot in Novi that recently opened over a year ago. It is a Korean barbeque restaurant where you cook your food. I also enjoy going to downtown Birmingham as they have a lot of stores and food options. For getting food quickly but still wanting a delicious meal, I love NYC Halal Eats and Saroki’s.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would give the most credit for my success to the following people:

I thank my family for every opportunity they have given me and helped me with my entire life. I have done so many things in life that wouldn’t have been possible whatsoever if I did not have the family I am blessed to have.

My principal, counselor, and teachers from my school, Oakland Early College, have always helped make my dreams possible. The program itself is amazing, but additionally being surrounded by people who genuinely care to help students.

Lastly, my close friends and boyfriend have done everything possible to make my life enjoyable. My success in life would not have been nearly as grateful to me in my heart without being surrounded by people who fill my heart.
