Meet Marin Beardslee | Artist & Fashion Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Marin Beardslee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marin, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
The way I view risk in my career is that it can be an opportunity for me to grow as an artist. One of the scariest moments in my career was putting my face in front of the camera, hitting record, and sending the first video of me showcasing my art to millions of people on the internet. I was so worried that I was going to be cyberbullied for the gap in my teeth, the dimple in my chin, or my thick (but fierce) eyebrows. Even though I knew this could be a possibility, I knew in order for my business to grow it was time to stop letting my fear control me, and take the risk! And it really paid off! Before I knew it my videos made my art and social media gain engagement like crazy. But in my career risks can look like a ton of different things for me. From deciding on a color pallette to making final touches and decisions on an art piece. All in all, risk is an open door and welcome opportunity!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art tells a story; my story. My art is my feelings manifested onto my canvas. A way for me to show the world what it looks like through my eyes. This includes my perception on beauty, mental health, and the things most people consider an oddity. My art sets me apart from others because my art is raw and real. I create my art to express the deepest parts of me in a way I find beautiful. That is what I am most proud of.
I got to where I am today professionally by never giving up. By believing in my art and never losing sight of my main career goals, I have kept my buisness active and thriving. It definitely has had its ups and downs but being an artist means there is no linear path. In my experience I had to teach myself alot of things about how to run a buisness, make a website, edit videos/photos, and the list goes on. But at the end of the day I was honing in on so many skills I didn’t even know I could do. It showed me I didn’t have to have a bunch of money to start and grow my buisness. With a little elbow grease I did all those things I thought I couldn’t do. It taught me that I should stop underestimating myself.
I want the world to know my art. I want the world to look at my art and take it all in for all that it’s worth. ToxicLollipop Art is for all my fellow weirdos and misfits out there who feel that they just don’t fit into todays societal mold.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First things first, we would head straight downtown and grab something to eat. I would never do something on an empty stomach! Shopping at small businesses for clothes or skincare essentials would be divine. We would end the day with coffee and a nice walk around a local park. The most fun and exciting places and people to meet are usually in the city. There are so many different kinds of unique experiences and people to take in, and the food is unbeatable!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My biggest shout out is to my family! They’re my biggest support and my #1 fans. They have all been there to be apart or witness all the behind the scenes work I do to make my art. They’re there when I need an opinion because I’m being indecisive in my art, when I need a shoulder to cry on because I thought I messed up my canvas but in actuality I was just over thinking, and reminding me that when I’m still painting at 3am it’s time to go to bed. They’re my favorite people and my team. I couldn’t do any of it without them!
