We had the good fortune of connecting with Mayah Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mayah, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I love all things music, finance, and tech. I wanted to create something that would help music artist and other creators feel safe with self expression, networking opportunities, and passive income. I started playing the trumpet when I was 5. I started reading music and joined a jazz band by the age of 7. My stepdad at the time was a trumpet player for Liquid Pleasure and he had his own record label. As I got older, I knew I would contribute to the world of music.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I love to create. I actually am the original writer of Pricey by J Cole x Ari Lennox Featuring Young Dro and Gucci Mane. The song is the #1 track on Grammy nominated Rap Album of the year “Might Delete Later.” I wrote it when I was in high school. I got invited to the “invite only” writing camp, but I was unable to make it due to my mother being sick and my father recent death. I didn’t have any money to do things I really wanted to invest at a young age. That was one major challenge for me. I’ve overcome many challenges, with my music being stolen and being played worldwide to not getting credit for my work. I’ve learned to move differently and to keep myself protected a lot more when it comes to my assets and monitor who I have around me. I love networking, but the challenges have put me at a standstill with not wanting to be around just anybody. Rather it’s digital art, animation, movie trailers, photography, or poetry, I love it all. GroovFi was created to harmonize music tech and finance which will give artist like myself opportunities to have access to resources and live events to network while also creating passive income. The process was not easy, but I trust in God and give credit to him for things going the way it’s been going. I’ve took a lot of losses and I’ve had a lot of wins, but it’s about balance. I’m able to maneuver in all types of environments and I’ve been able to be more diverse when it comes to networking because I’ve seen both good and bad. I’ve gained emotional intelligence and I’m able to learn from my mistakes to make myself better for what’s yet to come. My stepdad was very strict when it came to music growing up. Most times it was music then homework, but either way it both got done. I knew from a kid I wanted to go into music, finance, and tech. With GroovFi, I am able to intertwine all things that I have a passion for.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For the culture, I’d hit up an nba game, campus martius, cadillac square, greektown, and the Motown museum. Some great food spots I’d take my best friend would be Fixins Soul Food Kitchen, Javier’s, Breakfast Loft, Cliff Bell’s, Checkmate. I’d hit the town for dancing, drinks, and music at 3fifty, Hookah Glass House, Exodos Rooftop, Sandbox Bar and Lounge, and Society. If we’re going to continue to bet on women, there’s no way we can leave without cashing out at the MGM Grand Casino.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I give credit to those who deserve it, yes. I’ve built myself up from the ground up since I was about 16. I had dreams of owning a record label and earning multiple businesses like Jay Z. I knew exactly what I wanted. As an alumna of Allen University and Florida State University, I’d like to thank those who supported me along the way. For those who didn’t, thank you as well. As an alumna of Allen University and Florida State University, I give credit to those who helped me along the way, specifically Nancy Rhoads, Manuel Utset, and Laura Sellati. I also give credit to the members of Voices of Praise Gospel choir of Allen University for welcoming me to the family and allowing me to travel and rejoice in the name of God (Allah). Although I grew up Muslim and Catholic, I still listen to gospel no doubt and love to fellowship. Without VOP, I wouldn’t realize my true passion for furthering my education to enter into entertainment law. As the treasurer, I had to collect money from churches and organizations when we were asked to perform, so I was able to learn operations of a choir and/or band. Lastly, I’d love to shoutout United Talent Agency for the professional development and mentorship I received during my fellowship.
