We had the good fortune of connecting with Miriam Uhura and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Miriam, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success will always be authenticity. When you are authentic to your being, it’s easy to show up for what you love and believe in. Knowing who you are and being who you are, in truth, is what takes you the furthest.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Being self taught and multidimensional sets me apart from other. In this journey, I’m most excited about growth and seeing what personal goals I can accomplish next. Being able to coexist as both fine artist and body artist has been the most rewarding feeling. The way I got here is by being patient, having morality and being authentic. Those aspects alone are hard to a lot of people. Personally, I can’t just go for anything for the sake of looking “cool” or “making it”. You have to move with intention on top of having a moral code. That’s the best way to give birth to longevity in your career. It’s not always easy and can even feel lonely sometimes. The way I overcame the uneasy parts is by surrounding myself with equally yolked people and always practice gratitude.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ooh! I love this question because both of best friends live in NY!

The first thing on the itinerary is always food! I am greedy lol. For a quick bite I’ll take them to Fresh Rootz in Midtown. The best smoothies and vegan options from FireAssVegan, the soul food egg rolls are my absolute favorite. Since we’ll already be in the area, the next stop would be the DIA. The Tiff Massey Exhibit is a must see. Dequindre Cut for a good walk or bike ride. We’d explore around downtown, probably hit Queens or Standby for loud singing, lemon drops and vibes, Spotlite to get down lol! For dinner, top of the list is Baobab Fare. It’s too many good places but lastly, I love nature and being grounded, so Carpenter Lake just to exist.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
God, Community and the 48203. Without those three, there’d be no Miriam Uhura. God keeps me grounded and protected. The community nourishes me with love, support and healing. And as far as the 48203, that’s where I’m from. Highland Park molded me and was my first introduction to community.
