Meet Mohtashim Mahin | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mohtashim Mahin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mohtashim, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
Never Give Up!
When my partner and I started our business, things seemed promising—until COVID hit just two months later. Suddenly, we had no business. Every client canceled, and we had to return all the deposits we had received. It was a tough time, but we refused to give up.
By July, we started to see some progress, and in December, we had the opportunity to photograph our first out-of-state wedding in San Francisco. Excited, we traveled there, but things took an unexpected turn. On our second day in the city, while exploring as tourists, our car was broken into, and we lost half of our camera equipment.
It was devastating. Many would have given up right then, but we didn’t. The wedding was a three-day event, and we decided to make it work with whatever gear we had left. In the end, the clients were happy with the results, and we learned an invaluable lesson: no matter how tough things get, never give up.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Since middle school, I’ve had a deep passion for photography. I carried a point-and-shoot camera with me everywhere, capturing moments that sparked my creativity. While living in Bangladesh, I had the opportunity to work with a photographer, assisting him at events to learn the craft firsthand. Those experiences solidified my love for photography.
When I moved to the U.S., life became a whirlwind of school and work, leaving little time for my passion. However, I never let go of my dream. I started saving diligently and, in 2016, I bought my first camera. That purchase reignited my journey. I began practicing, experimenting, and learning all over again.
In 2017, I started freelancing for a company, which eventually led to photographing my own events. Photography became more than just a passion—it became a form of stress relief, a way to express myself. Then, in 2018, I joined a project to create a mural for the Bangladeshi community. One of my photos was chosen to be featured, and seeing my work on that mural was a monumental moment for me. It was not only a personal achievement but also an opportunity for others to recognize my work and connect with my story.
That mural represents more than an accomplishment—it symbolizes my journey, my dedication, and the love I have for photography. It’s a reminder of where I started and how far I’ve come.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my friends were visiting, I’d plan a day trip to Mackinac Island—it’s an absolute must-see. For dining, I’d take them to my favorite brunch spot in Dearborn, Avenue Brunch House, where the food is always amazing. When it’s time for coffee, we’d stop by either Qahwah House or Jabaal Coffee Shop, where we could relax and enjoy their incredible Adani Chai.
I’d also make sure to show them around downtown Detroit, highlighting its unique charm and vibrant atmosphere. Since I’m a foodie, I’d have a long list of fantastic places to take them for meals—it would be impossible to run out of great spots to explore!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to give a shoutout to my partner, Tufail. He’s been my partner through thick and thin, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without him. Also shoutout to my wife for being there for me and understanding me.
