We had the good fortune of connecting with Nathan Murray and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nathan, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The success of House Rules has been a direct result of the quality of our employees. Our dedicated staff is focused on customer service, friendliness, helpfulness, and game knowledge. They’re not only great bartenders but are truly interested in playing and teaching games.

What should our readers know about your business?
House Rules is a truly unique space. A place where friends and family can come together and laugh and have a good time. A space where you are welcome to be your authentic self. We love hearing from the community and how much they enjoy coming.

It was not an easy start. We opened in the fall of 2020; during COVID-19. We were limited to only 12 guests. We had little money, and a few games, and we weren’t sure we were going to last a week. When people did arrive, they said the same things. “What a great idea”, “What a cool store”, and “Wow, this is awesome”, and I have to say, that was encouraging.

We learned many things in our first year by figuring out what didn’t work, which is arguably the most expensive way to learn; however, it’s the most impactful. Our customers told us and we listened. It wasn’t about doing what WE thought was best but what the CUSTOMERS thought was best.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The Grand Rapids area has lots to offer. There must be 100+ different breweries in the area. I would certainly head to Trailpoint, Arvon, or City Built. If we’re in the mood for a cocktail, I’d head to Eastern Kille or Two James. For dinner, Max’s South Seas Hideaway, Social Misfits, or Butcher’s Union.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A part of our success is a result of the great work done by Eirann and Jenna Betka-Pope of Betka-Pope Productions. They’ve been great supporters of us for years, hosting trivia, and their involvement in the community is impressive.
