We had the good fortune of connecting with Rockim Williamson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rockim, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
One of the most (if not the most) important factors behind my success has been consistency. Being a creative I learned a long time ago no one really cares how good or talented you are, but how consistent can you be in your craft. As a musician, I believe that’s a crucial part in building a genuine fanbase; it’s hard for you to become someone’s favorite artist if you aren’t consistent.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a musician. Mainly in the Hip Hop/R&B genre but my goal is to be as versatile as possible. One of the things I’m most proud of is how far & how much I’ve been able to reach people all by being myself & learning new things about music business over the years. There’s no one way on how I got here, however keeping the right people around you is vital. Definitely wasn’t easy, but the challenges more so overcame themselves. I never really forced anything in my career, whenever I experimented things, whatever didn’t work just didn’t worked; & I tried something that did. Four of the biggest lessons I’ve learned as been patience, preparation, consistency, & discipline; & I feel as if they all speak for themselves. If there’s anything I’d want the world to know about my brand & I is Confidence can genuinely Create anything. Music, art, poetry, champions, awards, photography, businesses, a family; anything. If you wanna know what sets me apart you’d have to listen to my music to find out. 🙂

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ooh this may not be my question, I’m very basic in this regard lol. Gotta find the best coney island in the city, We can go to Monroe Street Midway or Campus Martius in Downtown Detroit or go to Belle Isle depending on the weather. Thinking about this off the top of the head is difficult, I’m a “go with the flow” type of person sometimes.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
If anyone, it’d be two different people. Firstly, my mom. She’s always protective of me & she was very hesitant at first when allowing me to actually pursue my craft seriously. Being a mom of 3 black boys, I can only imagine how much it took for her to trust I’ll be able to hold my own in a industry that’s (publicly) so dark. Big Shoutout to my mom. What’s up DUKES!!!

Second, my close friend Naim Muhammad. When I first started taking my career seriously, he was the person to teach me the who, what, where, when, & why’s. He took me to the shows I should’ve performed at, the places I should’ve been, the people I should’ve been around. He taught me important social media & business lessons, taught me why content is important, just too much to name. Without him, this journey definitely would’ve been 10x more difficult.
