Meet Stephanie Leaver | Photographer & Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephanie Leaver and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stephanie, what are you inspired by?
I draw my deepest inspiration from the natural world that surrounds me. The minute details and intricacies of nature, often overlooked by the casual observer, captivate me. I relish the opportunity to capture these hidden marvels through the lens of my camera.
In addition to nature, I find inspiration in two distinct art movements: Surrealism and BioArt. Surrealism allows me to manifest otherworldly imagery within the context of the natural world, creating a juxtaposition that highlights the mystical and fantastical elements of our environment. On the other hand, BioArt enables me to bridge the realms of photography and physical biology, showcasing the beauty and complexity of biological objects such as bees and hive pieces. These influences empower me to create art that is not only visually striking but also thought-provoking.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Outside of my work in the commercial product and portraiture realms, my personal artistic pursuits primarily gravitate towards environmental themes. However, I also delve into subjects concerning social and political issues, mental health awareness, and my own family history. One of my most notable series, known as ‘Hive Mind,’ actually comprises two smaller micro-series: ‘The Beauty and Prominence of Hymenoptera’ and ‘Florid Tenebrosity.’ This series is a deep exploration of the ecological symbiosis between pollinators and the plants they pollinate. It delves intimately into the vulnerability of pollinators and the potential consequences of their extinction. Macro photography is my chosen medium for this series and many of my other environmental works. Working in macro photography requires extreme proximity to the subjects, often just inches away. Surprisingly, I have a severe allergy to all types of bees, including honeybees, making this endeavor a personal challenge. To capture these exquisite moments successfully, I need both closeness and patience. My college professor affectionately nicknamed me ‘the bee whisperer’ because I mastered the art of capturing these elegant pollinators without causing them distress.
As for my overall photographic philosophy, I hold authenticity in high regard. In today’s digital age, where editing tools and AI enhancements are readily available, the genuineness and originality of images can be called into question. In my work, I believe that the unaltered moment, as it was captured, is inherently perfect. I don’t feel the need to embellish or add artificial glamour. The allure, beauty, and aesthetic quality of my work come from the authenticity and honesty of the moment as it exists in reality.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Originally, I am from the Grand Rapids, Michigan, area, which is a charming city where I spent my early years. For my college education, I made my way a bit south to Kalamazoo. In Grand Rapids, there’s a vibrant farmer’s market on Fulton Street, offering an array of local delights. You can have some quintessential autumn fun at Robinette’s with apple-picking and corn maze adventures. The Grand Rapids Art Museum is a hidden gem for art lovers, and Frederick Meijer Gardens beautifully fuses nature and art. Madcap is the place to be for coffee enthusiasts, and for a breathtaking view of the city at night, the Amway Grand Plaza is a must-visit.
Kalamazoo has its own unique charm, and it’s where I embarked on my college journey. The campus at Western Michigan University is a great place for a leisurely walk, immersing you in the college atmosphere. Coffee lovers will find their haven at Waterstreet Coffee. For tranquility and nature, Asylum Lake Preserve and Al Sabo in Portage offer lush landscapes to explore. And for some furry fun, Kzoo Cat Cafe is a unique experience for cat enthusiasts. When it’s time to satisfy your taste buds, Two Fellas Grill is a beloved spot, and you can count on The Library, The Old Goat, or Waldo’s Campus Tavern for vibrant nights out.
In July 2022, I relocated to the greater Sarasota/Bradenton area of Florida, which is teeming with its own set of attractions. The region boasts pristine beaches, from the world-renowned Siesta Key to serene shores like Longboat Key, Anna Maria Island, and Fort DeSoto, perfect for relaxation and exploration. The Sarasota Farmer’s Market and Lakewood Ranch Farmer’s Market are vibrant hubs of local culture and culinary delights. Ranch Nite Wednesdays at Waterside Place create a unique community experience. The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens offer a tropical oasis, while shopping enthusiasts can explore University Town Center and the upscale boutiques at St. Armands Circle. The serenity of Sarasota Bay may be embraced at Bayfront Park. When it’s time to dine, places like Ford’s Garage, Mizu Sushi, and Dream Earth Bowls cater to a variety of tastes. With the region’s perennially beautiful weather, there’s an open invitation to enjoy the sunshine all year round!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Undoubtedly, one of the most pivotal figures in my path to success is my late Grandmother. Her profound impact on my decision to pursue photography and art at the higher education level, as well as to establish my own photography business, cannot be overstated. Her unwavering support and her own experiences as a successful business owner served as a wellspring of inspiration. A defining moment occurred during a visit in mid-2017 when I shared my recent photographic prints, focused on botanical subjects like flowers and plants, with her. During our heartfelt conversation, she imparted invaluable wisdom, advising me to ‘choose a path that fills your heart with joy.’ She emphasized that, even if financial wealth was not guaranteed, pursuing one’s passion would lead to a life of contentment and pride. It was during this conversation that I wholeheartedly committed to a career in photography and the fine arts.
Furthermore, my family, particularly my husband, Tim, has been an unwavering source of support. His consistent encouragement and remarkable patience have been my anchor as I embarked on various photoshoots and artistic endeavors. Tim’s steadfast belief in my abilities and his gracious support have been pivotal in my journey.
