We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephen Hollowell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stephen, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I have always been fiercely independent, and an entrepreneur. When I was ten years old, we lived in a neighborhood with a golf course, and I would go out, find all the lost golf balls, clean them up, and sell them for a quarter apiece. I made a few hundred bucks this way, and I remember the excitement I felt being able to make something out of nothing. What starts with an idea can evolve into a highly successful business, if you put in the time, effort, and determination to make it happen. I have tried holding a “desk job,” and I have also been on a real estate team. Neither one was for me. I like being a solo agent, and having control over where I want my business to go.
What should our readers know about your business?
What I love most about being in the real estate business is building relationships with my clients. Most of my clients turn into friends, and I keep in touch with them long after the sale or purchase of their home. I’m big on sending birthday and home anniversary cards, holiday gifts, gifts for new babies in the family, etc. This is a people business, and I would not be where I am today without all the wonderful people that I am proud to call my clients. Starting in real estate was definitely not easy, and there were a few times during my first couple years that I almost quit. But I hung on, just kept going, and focused on taking care of my clients.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Whenever I have friends or family visit, we go to Jerusalem Garden in downtown Ann Arbor for lunch. This is a family favorite, and we have been enjoying their food since they were selling falafel sandwiches for $2.50 apiece from the little shack down the street from the library. I also really enjoy riding the bike, so if we can work in a bike ride around some of the amazing trails in Washtenaw County, we will definitely hit that up.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Starting your own business is definitely risky. If you fail, it’s all on you. And if you invested all your time and money into making your business happen, you could be left with nothing in the end if it all falls apart – nothing except for the people that believed in you, motivated you, and stuck by you while you were working on achieving your dream. For me, those people are my family and friends that have kept me going, and I would like to dedicate this feature to them.
