We had the good fortune of connecting with Steve Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Steve, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking

I grew up playing in bands. When my original band Vudu Hippies broke up in 2004, I began playing solo acoustic shows. It was a big risk, because I was used to playing with other musicians. I wasn’t sure how to do it. It was scary at first, facing a room full of people and performing alone. But, like anything else, you get better at it the more you do it. You develop a repertoire. You learn. You move forward. I’ve always felt that in order to grow, both as a person and a musician, you have to put yourself in situations that are uncomfortable. No risk, no reward.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

I started playing solo acoustic gigs in 2005. One night, my friends Bryan Frink and Carey Weaver showed up and began setting up behind me during my set. That night, THE STEVE TAYLOR THREE was born. We had all been in different bands in 90s and 2000s, but had never played together. After a few years Bryan and Carey said they wanted to start working on original music and they wanted to record an album. Our first album “Check Your Baggage” was released in 2014. We traveled to Memphis and Nashville to record our 2nd album “The Tennessee Sessions” in 2018. We’ve released two more albums since then (“Earn Every Scar” in 2020, and “Travel Light” in 2022) and we are currently working on our 5th. We love to write and record original music and then take those songs out and perform them at theaters and festivals. Doing music for a living is not easy. You can’t just do one thing, you have to do many things.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

My wife and I moved to Lake Orion, MI about 16 years ago to raise our family. We live in great neighborhood and have made many life long friends here. We love living so close to so the numerous Metro Parks and trails. There are many great bars and restaurants in downtown Lake Orion. I love performing at Wine Social, Fork ‘N Pint, and 20 Front St. There is even an outdoor amphitheater in Lake Orion called Wildwood. They host concerts all summer long.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

My wife Mēgan Taylor deserves a tremendous amount of credit for always having my back. She married a musician, and that’s not always an easy path. She’s a great wife and mother and is the glue that holds our family together. Also, my parents, Don and Diana Taylor. They’ve always encouraged to do music and never made me feel like I needed to “get a real job”.
