Meet Steven Foster | Songwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Steven Foster and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Steven, weโd love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
The “end” goal is a perpetual series of short-term goals. A crucial mistake in any undertaking is that we think we have more time, but there are no part-time human beings, we are ‘being’ all the time. In a world that seeks to call our attention away from the sheer miracle of being alive, I seek to focus attention, intention, and balance, along the paths that rise to meet me. The end of my life will be the end of my career, so both professionally and personally the goal is to be confident that I made the most of my time and opportunities.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I try not to get hung-up on the titles and definitions like “Artist”, or “Poet”, and just let that work be what it may. In my latest EP “Outsider Music” I selected an arrangement of songs that were written as detached from any outcomes imaginable, so the pieces fell into a that project. I hear that term “imposter syndrome” used by creatives sometimes, I get what they mean but I don’t subscribe to it. Seems like another mind-virus, one of the many that deter one from creating something good. Using the imagination looks a lot like laziness, but we shouldn’t be afraid to entertain art-work as messy as it may seem.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First things first, we would pour a nip of good bourbon, maybe have a few tasty cigars on hand, move out to the back patio and listen to music! From there start local and plot our way through any concerts or events that Michigan is known for. Almost any of our communities have some of the most talented bands and musicians playing out all week. Zef’s Dockside Bar & Kitchen in St. Clair Shores has an amazing Bourbon glazed Salmon (did I mention the bourbon?!), and Atwater Brewery in downtown Detroit does a tasty New England/Hazy called “Detroit City Juice”, not to be confused with dumpster juice which is well, dumpster juice.
Also, never underestimate the benefit of a good walk around town!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
For every one who becomes known for their work there are a million equally as talented people producing great works. I stand in awe and am inspired by those in Michigan’s artistic community, and consider myself lucky to have worked with some of them along the way like, Dan Mayer and Erik Shaltis of Cave Radio Broadcasting (caveradiobroadcasting.com). Not only are they active helping those within their community in need, they host CRB as a platform for Michigan musicians and artists, bringing them the exposure they deserve. Shoutout to Rudy, Carlito, and Santana Hill of Southwest Detroit who are community organizers, and creators of “Cruisin’ The Barrio”, providing a much needed service of keeping that old school funk and soul alive! Shotout to Drew Valdez known as “The Hood Picasso”, and rightfully so, he is one of the greatest painters of our time. Porn Cursive of Marysville MI is producing some of the most brilliant music in the state.. Native Howl are badass, and rapper Jeron “Dimension” Lucky deserves avenues of access to his work.
