We had the good fortune of connecting with The Corduroy Job and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi The Corduroy Job, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
The end goal is to always be creating pieces we can be proud of. Listening to old tracks and honing in on new ones becomes a life eras tour. As our track list grows, so does this creative record. Each song moves us back into a way we felt and a way we were. It’s the best form of reflection.

Alex: Professionally, I would like to substantially supplement my income sharing these pieces of reflection, and moving people musically, whether that is with an original, or a crowd pleasing cover. Being a career English teacher, I strive to meld the musical/creative and instructional schemas of my life into one.

Ben: With regards to The Corduroy Job, regardless of how lucrative the project ends up being, I hope we create authentic music that fosters a connection with our audience. Even with a small audience, it is gratifying to see our songs resonate with people on an emotional level. Ultimately I want us to have made a musical contribution that we can look back and be proud of, and also see that it made our listener’s lives better in a small way.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Our music is dynamic and varied. Each of our members brings a very different set of influences to the table. And while it can be difficult to synthesize all of our different creative instincts into a unified composition, the product of that process is uniquely ours, and that sets us apart. We are proud of writing and recording a high-quality EP and full album. It was a growing experience for us musically and personally, and it was not easy. Our challenges took a lot of discussion and compromise, we all had to trust each other’s creative input. It took a lot of time and patience, but we came out of it stronger musicians and people. We learned the importance of distilling a song down to its essential parts, not having any filler. Making our ideas serve the song is a challenge and often involves editing out musical ideas that we may really like.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would start breakfast at New York Bagel or Toast in Ferndale. Afterwards, we would take a bike ride to Belle Isle and take a swim in the river. Next, we would grab a beer at Eastern Market and check out the murals (and hopefully it’s a Saturday so we could get some fresh food at the market!) We’d fill our stomachs at either Supinos Pizza or Green Dot Stables. The night would end at a DCFC soccer game with some dancing at Marble Bar, or some live jazz music at Motor City Wine.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We would like to all thank our families and friends for being supportive from the beginning. In the early days, sometimes they were the only thing that stood between playing for a crowd and playing for an empty bar. We’d also like to thank our neighbors for tolerating a small level of noise from time to time. For Alex and Ben, they’ve both had guitar teachers that served as mentors that guided them when beginning their musical explorations.
