Meet Tiki March | Wedding & Event Planner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tiki March and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tiki, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I was actually pondering on it for a couple years before I started. It would come across my mind and I would do a little research but didn’t know If I really wanted to pursue it. Mainly because I didn’t know how or where to start. I also thought It was too late to start a business in my 40’s. (simply not true) But it would always come back up in some kind of way. Then I would look into starting a small business some more, how much money would it take? what was the success rate? how to start a legit/legal business? Until one day I just started. I created business cards and told everyone I ran across that I was a wedding & event planner and if they knew of anyone planning an event to refer them to me.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a wedding & event planner who specializes in themed events. I’ve always loved everything about weddings (the planning process, the color schemes, the dress, the cake, etc.) I’ve also, always loved planning cool parties, decorating and entertaining. So I decided to put some intentional effort into doing the things I loved and creating a business out of it.
I believe that my love for people and passion for creative events is what sets me apart from others. I care so much about my clients and making everything perfect for them that I literally lose sleep until the event is over. I’m also good at being creative when something doesn’t go as planned, it usually turns out better than the original plan lol. I am very proud about every event that I’ve been able to do so far! I learned something valuable from every client and every event. Each event that I’ve done, fueled me with more passion to do the next one.
I am where I am today because I believed in myself. It was not easy! I have been through a whole lot of no’s, dead ends, and closed doors but I kept asking, kept going, kept knocking, and kept pursuing my dream. Even when no one was calling or emailing me for my services, I just kept learning everything I could so that I could be ready when the calls and emails did come.
I’ve learned that the wedding & event industry is a fast past and ever-changing industry so I have to be willing to be flexible, adaptable, and open minded. I’ve also learned that no matter how hard I try I can’t please everyone so I stay true to myself and the standards that I have set for myself and I kindly remove myself from anyone or anything that would compromise those standards.
I want the world to know that I am Tiki March, proud owner of Experience-Designs. I started this small business not knowing much and I’m still figuring it out along the way. It’s never too late to start and if I can do it, they can too!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to Detroit. I love hanging out downtown Detroit. There are a lot of cool museums, antique shops, hangout spots and family owned restaurants. The people there are very proud of their culture, community and fascinating history. There’s not a spot you can go yo that doesn’t display a piece of Detroit’s history through (pictures, paintings, murals, artifacts, statues, etc.) When going there you’ll learn some stories and you walk away with some stories to tell.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a shoutout to my husband Cedric and our 3 children; Cedriana, Deyana, and Corvell. They have all encouraged and helped me from the beginning. But especially Cedric, he’s there after hours when the kids have quit on me lol, he’s the main one that I run my ideas or issues by before making any major decisions.
