We had the good fortune of connecting with Amari Dickerson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amari, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I have never been afraid to take risk. Taking a risk only has two outcomes, success or failure. If I succeed? Great, now I know this is something I can do. If I fail, I just take a step back and think about where things went wrong and what I can do differently.
Taking a risk and starting my own Etsy shop has created clientele for me that I thought I would never have. Taking that risk allowed me to have an increase in sales, income, and support for my business.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My ability to recreate images and design party favors using unique characters and fonts is what sets me apart from others. Just recently, I did a Minnie Mouse theme party and the coloring book I designed included a coloring page of the birthday girl! I’m not saying that it’s never been done, but it’s not done often. I got to where I am today by being dedicated and wanting to be successful. The road was not easy but I know it’s necessary, I have two little people depending on me so when things get hard, I pray and revamp my plan. I want the world to know that The MMC is just getting started, it is only a matter of time before we are decorating for people you see on TV or making shirts for your favorite celebrity.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being that it is fall, we would definitely go to an apple orchard! We’d take a stroll Downtown Detroit and grab a bite to eat at a Coney Island. There are tons of bars around so it’s hard to choose but we’d hit a local bar for a drink or two. Throughout the week we’d go to different restaurants, maybe even Mexican Town and possibly catch a game at the Lions Stadium or a concert at The Little Caesars Arena. I’m typically a home body but Detroit is full of historic places to visit and tons of spots for fun!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
If I took time to shoutout every person who has played a part in my story, this interview would be never ending. I’d like to first shoutout my mom. Before her life took a turn and she became ill, my mom was the hardest working woman I knew! When she was sick, she was at work. When she was tired, she worked two jobs! She always worked hard for the things she wanted most and she always made sure I never went without, even while sick and in a nursing facility, she made sure I was good! It is because of her, I have that same drive and ambition to keep going and work hard so my babies never lack anything they need and/or want! Shoutout to my babies, they’re too young to understand now but they are my reason for everything. Without them, I would not go as hard as I do when it comes to my business and my craft. Shoutout to my boyfriend/the father of my babies, he’s listened to every business idea, he’s helped with every event set up, he’s tried every product! He is beyond supportive and always rooting for me. Shoutout to my friends/family that have ever supported my business, gave me props where props were due, gave me advice, taught me something new! I love everyone that loves me and I’m beyond grateful for everyone who is apart of my story. It’s way too many to name but they know who they are and what they have done and I love them to pieces for it!
