We had the good fortune of connecting with April Lockett and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi April, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m from the Westside of Detroit, Michigan. I come from a large family and I am the middle child of 8 children. I was raised by my grandparents who instilled a strong work ethic at an early age. My grandparents worked hard my entire life, my grandmother was a homemaker who took care of us day in and day out. My grandfather worked and provided for us and taught us the value of being a hard worker, I could not be the person I am today without them. The way that I work and think is because they never let me give up on myself. I was taught nothing comes to a sleeper but a dream so I get up every day and work to make my dreams come true.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I have a show called “Ask AP” which can be seen Via Instagram every Wednesday at 9pm. I started my show in 2015 after I was fired from my first ever radio job. In 2020 I started “Ask AP’ Live where I conduct interviews with some great people doing great things in the world. I think what sets me apart is my interview style, I pride myself in making people feel as comfortable as possible. I want my guest to always feel like it just two old friends just catching up. I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve built over he years my show is super successful because of them. I think I’m where I am today by the grace of God, I have not always done things the way I should have but his grace and mercy has kept me. My journey has not been easy, I have a lot of set back and let downs but I always kept going because tough times don’t last tough people do! I have learned some very valuable lessons along the way the most important one is ” Nobody Owes you anything” you have to work for everything there are no handouts in life. One thing I want people to know about my brand is that it’s REAL what you see is what you get and I wholeheartedly love what I do!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my Best friend was visiting the city I would first take her to MGM Grand Immerse Spa, after a day of traveling I think that’s a good way to unwind. Then, I would take her to dinner at Lumen downtown Detroit because we both love pasta and we would have some drinks as well. The rest of the week would be full of shopping, eating, some much needed girl talk. I really love how downtown Detroit is coming up so I would love to check out the newly opened attractions.

Alright, so let’s jump right in! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there a person, group, organization, book, etc. that you want to dedicate your shoutout to? Who else deserves a little credit and recognition in your story?
