Meet Maryam Faison | Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Maryam Faison and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maryam, why did you pursue a creative career?
Freedom of expression, it allowed me to express myself and my voice without words, creating my own world, through art, colors, textures, music, and truly getting out of my comfort zone. I’ve always been a visual learner so I’d incorporate that into whatever piece I was creating and seeing what elements I’d could use within my work, I use flowers the most because to me it represents life and death and how both things can coexist. Growing up I was shy with my art so I never really shared anything, due to rejection or not being perfect. I don’t care much for perfectionism, I just enjoy creating and making art and being present in the moment and the world

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
So I’ve been working on these collages for a while, they’re were some trial and error here and there, but it’s all a learning process and experience nonetheless. My biggest challenge was figuring out how to get a new perspective without letting my brain get distracted by the fact that I was trying something different and not being able to focus on the old ones that were there. I’d want the world to know how to do something new and not be stuck in the past and how I could be able to do things differently and it be okay. anything can be overwhelming at times but it can be a challenge and that’s why I’m always learning new techniques and new things to try and make it work for me

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m from Detroit and one of the most popular places I’ve been is the DIA it’s a beautiful museum filled with art from the past and future, they’d also enjoy the Renaissance building filled with stores and restaurants and Comerica Park formerly known as Tiger Stadium you could catch a baseball game, my favorite place to visit is the Riverwalk here filled with rides and a playground, great to visit in the summer

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family has been my biggest support system in anything I’ve done, they’re the thread that keeps me together in this chaotic world. even when my art wasn’t where it should be they encouraged me to push myself and practice and study, so I’m grateful for them and their help. Thank you
