Meet Erica Soto | Musician & Educator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Erica Soto and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erica, why did you pursue a creative career?
From a young age, I learned to read and play music. As I grew and became a vocalist, I knew performing would be an important part of my life. I also always knew I wanted to be an educator. I remember the safety I found with my music teachers & mentors, who are now my colleagues. I am motivated by my students and their willingness to grow as musicians. My careers as an educator, director and professional musician allow me to pursue my passion & serve my community in many ways.
I also love traveling to different places and sharing the stage with incredible musicians.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is best described as a soulful and entertaining. My teaching philosophy is “Be brave and bold!” I am the only bilingual, Afro-Latina, Puerto Rican teacher in my school communities. Being able to connect culturally, socially, and musically makes a huge impact on my students. I’m also often the only person who looks like me in many of the spaces I perform. I’ve learned that I need to share my voice regardless. Music heals & connects people, no matter where they come from.
All of my experiences & willingness to learn, opened doors to many opportunities and achievements in my musicianship and leadership. I’m thankful for my family, friends, and the theater and music community that embraces me.
This was especially true when I was in the middle of a production and lost my oldest son on Christmas Day 2019, a few months before the pandemic. I did not think I could continue living, let alone performing. If it wasn’t for my support system and theater family, I would’ve given up on music altogether. I wouldn’t be performing for people. I’m so thankful I remained resilient and focused. The stage has become my safe place.
It takes a lot of discipline, rehearsals, dedication, vocal care, lost sleep, rest and sacrifice to live as a musician. This is especially true when preparing for performances. It also takes a lot of balance to be a mother and lead in my classrooms.
I want the world to know that it is possible to use your gifts to heal yourself and others. Make room for creativity, whatever that looks like for you. Also, please support the arts in our schools!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shout out to my beautiful support system, my children, family & friends. I especially want to recognize and send a huge shoutout to my amazing parents in Puerto Rico. They always encourage me to follow my dreams and never give up.
