We had the good fortune of connecting with Sara Ashley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sara, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
I don’t want to be stuck working behind a desk my whole life. I dream of owning my own studio where I can continue to create everlasting memories for people. I would also love to be able to travel for my work; whether all around the US, or the world. I want to be able to fully sustain myself, my family, and my lifestyle while doing what I love.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what sets me apart from others is my passion. I’ve enjoyed photography as a hobby for years before I’d ever thought of turning it into my career or business. I’ve learned you need to be persistent if you want to be successful, especially in this industry. Even when I’ve felt like quitting or giving up, whether it be because of a lack of motivation, lack of clients, being busier in my personal life, etc, I still have never given up. If I didn’t love what I do, I wouldn’t be doing it. I get so much joy out of experimenting with different techniques to process my work and trying out fun new concepts. Nothing beats seeing a client’s reaction to their photos either, especially if it was something really meaningful to them. But it was not easy to get to where I am as a photographer today. It still isn’t. Building a clientele has been my biggest challenge and is something I still struggle with sometimes, but I don’t let that deter me — I have to stay persistent! I’ve also learned not to compare myself to other creatives. Comparison is the thief of joy. Looking up to other artists & photographers is okay, but I refuse to compare myself. If I compare myself, I discourage myself. If I look to others as muses and inspiration, I feel more empowered to create something meaningful and one of a kind.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them downtown for sure. Likely to the DIA and the library first, then to one of my favorite vegan restaurants, Seva Detroit or Detroit Vegan Soul. Those were my go-to restaurants when I was attending College for Creative Studies. Then we’d visit Socra Tea for a warm, relaxing cup of some of the best tea I’ve had. From there, we’d head to Third Man Records and some of my favorite vintage shops. I love to collect vintage things and records. Before heading closer to my home, I’d take them to Belle Isle to see the conservatory & aquarium. Near my house, there is a park on Lake St Clair that has a beautiful pier leading far out into the water, as well as a little community building with rooftop access and firepits. It is my favorite place to visit in the summer, especially at sunset.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My partner has been my number one fan & supporter ever since I started taking my business seriously and dedicating a lot of my time and energy into creating who I want to be as an artist, as well as my brand. He has always supported me, with whatever business venture or idea I’ve come up with, and even comes along as my assistant for some of my sessions. My best friends, Zoe and Faith. They’ve always helped me come up with fun & creative ideas, sometimes even letting me test out some of the concepts with them. I can always count on Zoe to volunteer to model for any of my ideas. All of them are my own little personal hype team and I appreciate their love & support more than I could ever express, and more than they’ll ever know. I can’t forget about my family, either! If you’re reading this, thank you for your encouragement & support. Lastly, all of my clients, for allowing me to use my creative freedom, and choosing me to capture yourselves’ & your families’ most precious moments. Some of you have given me some of my firsts, like my first wedding (thank you, Terri & Vince!). I wouldn’t be doing what I do if it weren’t for all of you, so, thank you.
