We had the good fortune of connecting with Eric Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eric, what’s your definition for success?
Each of us have different views of success but my definition is focused on lifestyle and intangible things. Success in my book, is being able to live the lifestyle you want with autonomy and pride. The man that loves what they do for work, is able to not miss his kids’ sports games or that family party, can vacation whenever he wants, and can have his hobbies, is what I believe success looks like. Don’t get me wrong a mansion, a couple super cars, and millions in the bank are great things… but if that person can’t live the lifestyle they want, then that is not success. I believe success is more about the intangible things in life. Life is short and can change rapidly. Tomorrow is never guaranteed. You shouldn’t be waiting to live the lifestyle you want.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I graduated with high honors from Madonna University in 2015 with my: Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice, Associates in Homeland Security, and certifications in Homeland Security and Private Investigation. Since then, I’ve continued my education and now hold over 20 professional certifications in areas like: Continuity of Operations, Emergency Management for Senior Officials, Leadership and Influence, etc… In my career, I have worked in asset protection, several security command centers, and as an emergency manager and business continuity advisor. Boiling down my story on how I got here, it would come down to having: great mentors, always trying to learn and grow, working hard consistently, being a servant leader, and networking and building great relationships. If I could give advice to anyone based off my story it’s this; Don’t be afraid to make your own path. When you study Criminal Justice, it’s almost always implied you become local, state, or federal law enforcement when you finish your degree. I did nothing in law enforcement. I made my own path and a rewarding career that I wouldn’t change.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m such a foodie most of the trip would be focused on food and trying craft beers! I would have to take my best friend to some of the best spots in Clarkston, where I live. Clarkston Union, Mr. B’s, and Parker’s Hilltop Brewery are my favorites. Hit a great concert at Pine Knob or in Detroit. I also love up north as well! I would take them up to Manistee area where my dad lived. I love the downtown, beach area, and the restaurants. My dad and I always enjoyed going to North Channel Brewery when we would head to the downtown. We would have to do some sort of bonfire and cookout with my dad’s friends while we were up there!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ve been so thankful to have wonderful people and a great support system around me. First and foremost, would be my father (Bill Johnson), who was my best friend, and who my book is about. Next to: My mom, stepdad, Uncle Robert, and the rest of my family and friends for their love and support. Author Mark Manson and Chaney Crabb, of the band Entheos, for the inspiration to write the book. Lastly to celebrities: Brandon Novak, Chael Sonnen, Rhona Mitra and Tanit Phoenix for their advice they gave me on my book.
