We had the good fortune of connecting with Danyell Bragg and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Danyell, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
In 2022 I was nominated to be featured in the Detroit Historical Museum. There were over 800 nominations of Detroit business; from there 32 honorees were selected. Out of the 32 honorees selected I was the only hairstylist of the group. This opportunity allowed my business and talent to be showcased in the museum. The name of the exhibition is “The Hustle”; this campaign was designed to showcase Detroits un-sung talent and pillars of the community. The exhibition was first showcased in 2022 and will continue until April of 2024. Being able to be recognized on such a grand stage has propelled my business and brand to new heights. No matter what level my business soars to I will always be a part of Detroit history, which is an important factor to me and the story of my success.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The thing I’m most proud of when it comes to my business if it gives me a chance to provide a positive example to my daughter of the beauty a black owned business can be. Using social media platforms along with networking amongst friends and family helped me increase awareness. One of my biggest challenges business wise is the current economy. With inflation of hair care products it caused inflation in the prices of services in my customers. A couple of ways i overcame this struggle is by creating my own hair oil to use for customers, and doing specials for loyal customers. One lesson I learned along the way is to be adaptable but without diminishing the integrity of your business. And what I would want the world to know about my business is that I started it as a way to do something I have a passion for which is nurturing and styling black hair; and that I’m proud it provides a great example for my daughter on what you can accomplish when you work hard.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to some black owned restaurants. Tao in specific would be good times and petty cash in livernois. I would take them for drink’s at the locker room. I would take them to the drive in movie theater on ford. I would take them to walk around downtown detroit campus and walker. I would take them on the pedal car to see the beauty of the city and experience the fun of drinking at the same time.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give recognition to Tenise Lucas of Desirable Glam for giving me a space to foster and grow my business. The Detroit Historical Society for choosing my black owned business to be showcased during there campaign. Also i would like to dedicate part of my success to my mother who passed down the natural ability to nurture hair to me.
