How to think through whether you should start a business

Readers often email us asking us for advice about new businesses they are thinking about starting and we often find that many of them don’t have a framework for thinking about a more fundamental question: why should or shouldn’t you start a business?

Whatabout Theatre was started to create a home for improvisational theatre in Ypsilanti, MI. A group of improvisers came together to discuss our dreams and ideals for a new improv theatre. We were reacting to the changes in the world and in the theatre industry that came to light during the pandemic. I just did it! I’ve been writing & creating since I was in elementary school.. so I don’t really think I saw it as a business but more so I’ve always saw it as me just being me. One of the main thought processes that I had behind starting my own business largely has to do with my want for a good work life balance and for the freedom to pursue the work that I want to do in the way that I want to do it. Going into business for myself allows me to decide the hours I work, excluding what I need to do to earn enough to cover necessary expenses. I also get to decide when I put those hours in. If there are important obligations I have to honor for friends and family or if I simply want a bit of a break, I can decide to work fewer hours. Conversely, I can work more if I want to save up.
