We had the good fortune of connecting with Liz Kipfer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Liz, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I didn’t really have a thought process behind starting my own business in the beginning. I just did it, and looking back it was honestly the best decision I ever made. I started my photography business on a whim. I thought “if people like my work and want to book with me, great. If they don’t, well they don’t. And thats okay.” I just figured I’d try and do something I loved and see where it got me. Thankfully and luckily my little photography business has flourished and grown into something I’m extremely proud of. Everyday I strive to make a name for myself by being authentically me while taking beautiful photos that others will cherish for a lifetime.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My photography is my art. There are a million and one photographers out there so It’s honestly quite a tough industry to be in since you never really know when your next inquiry will come in. People book you based on a number of different factors like editing style, word of mouth recommendations, and pricing. What sets me apart from other photographers in my area is my devotion to my clients and my simplistic approach to everything session related. I DO NOT LIKE STRESS. Photography to me has always been a creative outlet I turn to to have fun. I never want it to be something I stress over or rely on financially. Therefore I make every single session enjoyable from the booking process to delivery. I’m always rooting my clients on, encouraging them to do silly fun things to make the photos more personable, and my rates are affordable. I like to work with the person/families not for the money but for the experience.

How did I get to where I am today professionally? I just kept pushing and I never gave up on myself. I have continued to grow and work my craft to what it is today by learning from others in my industry, asking questions, second shooting for some of my favorite photographers, watching tons of YouTube (literally todays university). It hasn’t been easy but it has definitely been worth it.

I’m most proud of making a professional name for myself and the tons of features I’ve had in various photography magazines and apps this past year alone. I’ve been featured in 3 different photography magazines, and the Unscripted App for Photographers 3 times. It just makes me feel good to know people like my work.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was coming to visit let’s say fall/winter This is what I’d plan for us.
We’d definitely be going to a Red Wings game – I’m a huge fan! And then probably have night/day on the town after or before the game.
I’d take them to one of my favorite hidden gems of a park for photos. Can’t disclose the location as it’s a hidden gem for a reason.
I’d probably have my husband cook for us a couple nights during their stay. He literally is the grill master of our family so we never go hungry when he’s around.
I’m somewhat of a homebody so we’d probably also go hang out at my parents house for a bit. They have a gorgeous kitchen/living room area that we hangout in almost every weekend.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband and kids are my biggest supporters. I wouldn’t be where I am today without all 3 of them. My husband has been my backbone and main source of encouragement and support through everything. He is the one who cheers me on in every scenario. He encourages me to keep pushing myself and to never give up. I originally got my idea of taking photos for others from taking photos of my kids. I thought that since I like taking photos of them and documenting their lives I should try and see if I could do the same things for others.
