Meet Danny Nelson

We had the good fortune of connecting with Danny Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Danny, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I knew I wanted to have control over my own destiny and future. I knew that it would be a challenge but I knew that the reward was/is going to be worth the risks. I’d rather bet on myself than bet on somebody else because I can control how smart and hard I work.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Daniel Nelson Designs was started while I was in college. I originally was just doing Tile work for friends on the side for gas money. I was not the fastest but I did my very best work, documented it, and worked my way onto bigger and bigger jobs. Due to my ability to communicate with customers (simply being respectful, responsive, and truthful.) and the care and pride in my work, I quickly had a positive trending reputation around town. Connections help as my friends gave me lots of business.
I definetly had some growing pains to start, but those can be looked at in two ways.
1. I totally messed this up, maybe I can’t do this.
OR
2. Wow, I totally messed this up, I’m going to learn all that went wrong, and it’ll never happen again.
“Every education comes at a cost.”
The best way to learn is by doing it wrong. The pain of failure is never forgotten so you’ll only makes them once! Get them out of the way and it is smooth sailing.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Assuming it’s summer time, there is nothing better than the crystal blue waters of Higgins lake, or the many other lakes in Mi

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family and parents definitely got me off on the right foot by allowing me to play Hockey. Throughout my career from mini mites to the CCHL I learned so many life lessons! I learned how to work really hard, how to win, how to loose, and how to work together with others despite differences.
Business wise, my tile mentor Lee Groff was a monumental help in getting me started in the building and design field. Learning tile from Lee would be the equivalent of learning golf from Tiger Woods. He is an amazing talent and I was lucky enough to soak up some of his wisdom and use it to help me along the way. Watching a master like Lee was rocket fuel for development.
