We had the good fortune of connecting with Melvina Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melvina, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The entire concept and thought process behind my business was birthed from self empowerment, self care and self awareness. As someone who has pushed beyond physical illnesses, personal losses, grief etc this taught me to evolve and transform and bring my inner being to the forefront unapologetically. Giving women the experience of versatility in their appearance, while sustaining the care of their natural hair. That is the meaning of Boss Lady Virgin Hair Collection.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am not only an entrepreneur but I am a Licensed Realtor, Licensed P&C producer, a Licensed Life, Health, Accident agent, an Author and Certified Life Coach. I believe in leaving my mark on this earth. I enjoy my pursuit of my passions and that is my purpose. I believe in living the example that you can change the course of your life one step at a time a clear goal.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would say a nice spot would be downtown Detroit Fixins Kitchen for some good soul food! Always nice to grab a ticket or two to a Detroit Pistons game or Red Wings or Detroit Lions depending on the season! Lots of art galleries, poetry slams fun times to be had!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a shout out to my mother! This lady is the first inspiration for me and the true definition of a BossLady. I watched her as she worked in an automotive plant for almost 30 years. Putting aside her personal wants unselfishly while raising 4 kids as a single parent. I never knew strength until she showed me and to this day still going strong she continues to inspire me and I pray to make her proud through all my endeavors. I also would like to Thank my Pastors Bishop Mack and The King Bishop Bobby Davis of The Spiritual Israel and Its Army church in Detroit, Mi. They are my rock and support through life and taught me to give back as my praise.
