We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyleatha Thurman-Equere and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tyleatha, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
More money, freedom, and being able to take care of my kids.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Detroit Black Bottom Kitchen’s motto is to serve flavorful food for the soul. We stand out with quality service, flavorful food, ambiance, great prices, and more importantly making sure our customers are satisfied. I’m proud that I put in the work to get good feedback and so excited that not one bad review. My Journey as an Entrepreneur/Business Owner was forced on me after losing my job of 10 years where I used to sell handbags and jewelry in the break room. I then in 2012 I was introduced to network marketing MLM, but that didn’t work out for me, I worked as a Tax preparer for one year and then opened my store, The Tax Geeks, in which that business became my bread and butter to create other businesses. I went broke three times money was good but I did not do all the right things to maintain the money. Starting my first business was not easy, but I stood tall through it all. I learned that just because you become a Six-Figure earning doesn’t mean you’re rich, it’s more to life than money. I want the world to know that it’s a risk, in which every risk requires a reward. The goal is to, chase your dreams, create freedom, and please don’t put all your focus only on making money.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love some good music and spots with a nice vibe. We would have a brunch date at Rose House Brunch in Shelby Township, MI., dinner at Sexy Steak, go to a book bar, do some shopping, self-care date, and maybe even jump on the road and do a 2-3 road trips to Ontario or Ohio and find something to do other than in my city. I’m a very spontaneous woman.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
During my journey, I became a heavy motivational book reader, from TD Jakes, Joel Olsteen, Eric Thomas, etc. Along with tons of affirmation quotes, such as Les Brown, Zig Ziglar, Oprah Winfrey, and many more. As I read about how they all had overcome their trials, I was boosted to stay in the game. My two sons were my first WHY, my mother, sisters, and a host of family members and real friends supported me throughout my journey.
