We had the good fortune of connecting with Bryce Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bryce, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m from Oak Park, Michigan. A small suburb north of Detroit, on the other side of 8 mile. I got a chance to live in several cities before the age of 20, but Oak Park is where it felt like home the most.
In 2009, when the housing market collapsed; it forced my family into an eviction that only took a weekend to put our belongings in the street. It was our Oak Park home in Scotia. The place that felt like home the most to me growing up.
After that occurred, things changed for me mentally and emotionally. I was kicked out of nearly every school I went to for almost 4 years because I couldn’t adapt to change. I hated change. Every new school I attended was nothing like the last. Public School, Private School, Charter, and possibly Military School if I didn’t pull my act together.
At the time, I didn’t realize how many people I had made great connections with just by attending the same schools because I was so focused on ‘change’. Creating reasons to not like the environment I was forced to be in based on circumstances I couldn’t control.
Now, as an adult. I’ve concluded that I still don’t like change. But anything I don’t like (environment, relationships, quality) I’m going to change it. Instead of allowing it to change me (character, morals, and lifestyle).
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Being raised by a family of hustlers and creatives, I’ve always been able to indulge in different niches.
In Kindergarten, my imagination was just as big as it is now if not bigger. As the captain of my recess football team, I wanted my team to have jerseys so when I got home that night, I found every White T-shirt I could find and some markers then got to work. I went to school the next day with 11 self-made jerseys stuffed in my backpack to hand out to my team on the playground.
As a visionary, I desire to see everything I design or create come to life. It is an absolute must that the products, ideas, or services I construct be brought to life in the quality and shape I imagined. Attention to detail is something I wouldn’t be able to live without because it solidifies my ability to design, designate, and reach my destinations without a doubt in my mind that things will work out.
Failure is always possible but nothing would be possible without failure. There are plenty of times where something I designed didn’t come out how I expected but that doesn’t mean I quit on it. Take notes on what went wrong, apply them to the next trial, and go again until it looks better than imagined.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Personally, being outgoing is not something I’ve had the pleasure of doing over the last few years. When I step out, I’ll usually hang out in Downtown Detroit, Downtown Birmingham, or Windsor, Ontario for restaurants and lounges. Detroit has plenty of adventurous things to do for tourists.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m honored to dedicate this series to my multi-talented family whose work and experience have been underlooked for many generations. Curating culture on major levels for different artists and professionals all over the world.
Lastly, I want to dedicate this series to myself. Considering it probably sounds selfish, I have never given myself the extra credit and recognition in my own story. I’m a very humble person who doesn’t like to flex my capabilities but as I come to appreciate them, it would be wrong of me not to recognize them because they make me, me.
