We had the good fortune of connecting with CandiCoatedInk and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi CandiCoatedInk, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Creating CandiCoatedInk LLC was one of the best things that has ever happened to me. I grew up in an environment where we were taught to work a job. Entrepreneurship was always an interest for me because I wanted to create something that reflects me. See, with a job you can always be replaced but with a business that’s created and reflects you, your history will live on forever.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My artwork varies in so many different ways. I love fine line, script, small/tiny tattoos and cover ups, I also do permanent makeup. I not only care about the art, I care about my clients. I believe customer service is everything and the more comfortable you make your client feel the better services will be provided. I ensure that every client that sits in my chair is satisfied. I worked so many customer service jobs in my lifetime that customer service is natural to me. Entrepreneurship is never easy it takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and confidence. I’ve learned to never give up and to always remain positive and truly genuine with all things that you do. My business creates a safe environment that’s honest and a safe space for everyone.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Detroit is a beautiful city, with a million things to do. I would definitely suggest belle isle as a great place to visit and it’s filled with so many different restaurants the taste is depending on what you want. Plenty of brunch places such as The Block or Marybelles Cache, Babo’. We have upscale restaurants such as Joe Muer and Prime and Proper. The choices for are insane, you can get a lo of authentic foods here.. There are several things to do in our city such as, axe throwing, boat rides, helicopter rides, casino etc. Depending on what your interest is the choices are endless.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I created this business behind working at a shop that was created by my daughter’s father. Shortly after having my daughter I worked in a shop (Full Circle) surrounded by multiple creatives. My daughter and being around these creatives encouraged me to start tattooing. During my years of tattooing I came across several tattoo artist far greater than me that have guided me in the right direction. The Guru (tattoo artist) stayed on top of motivating me to quit my day job and start tattooing full time as a career. Years later, I had another great artist friend of mine, Artist Jason Phillips who owns a shop (Detroit Ink Spot) talk me into guest spotting. After guest spotting twice at his shop, I decided to join the team. After working there another great female tattoo artist Lady L Tattoos encourage me to start to tour. She owns an all black female tattoo tour with woman from all over the world working together called Ladies Of Ink. This is how all of my great artist friends help motivate me to the progress and development of my business until this day.
