Hi Chelsea, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?

Starting Twist Events at the age of 26 was both a leap of faith and a personal journey shaped by a myriad of experiences. My decision to embark on the entrepreneurial path was sparked during a poignant moment in my life. Having just moved back to Michigan from Colorado to be with my Papa in his final days, I found myself at a crossroads. Writing my business plan on my Nana’s screened-in porch during that time was both cathartic and transformative.

Starting a business was a daunting prospect, especially since I knew little about the intricacies of entrepreneurship. However, armed with a strong work ethic cultivated from my experiences, I embraced the challenge. Graduating from Bartending School at the age of 18 provided me with a foundational skill set, and studying Event Management at Western Michigan University equipped me with the knowledge to navigate the dynamic world of events.

Fueling my decision was a genuine love for people and a passion for social interactions. This intrinsic motivation became the driving force behind Twist Events, shaping its ethos of creating memorable and engaging experiences.

Reflecting on my initial aspirations versus the reality of Twist Events today, the journey has been one of incredible growth and learning. Although I had limited knowledge of starting or running a business back then, my determination to succeed propelled me forward. Each challenge and uncertainty became an opportunity for both personal and professional evolution, contributing to the refinement of both myself and Twist Events.

Starting this business has not only allowed me to pursue my passion but has also been a journey of self-discovery, resilience, and the joy of creating meaningful connections. The transformation from an idea on my Nana’s porch to the reality of Twist Events today is a testament to the power of determination, adaptability, and the unwavering belief in the vision that sparked it all. I wholeheartedly believe that when you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work, and that sentiment is at the core of Twist Events’ success.

In hindsight, I wouldn’t change a thing. The journey of building Twist Events from scratch has been a roller coaster of experiences, but the fulfillment that comes from creating unique and memorable events is immeasurable. Every twist and turn, every challenge and triumph, has shaped Twist Events into what it is today—a thriving bartending and hospitality company with a unique story and a genuine passion for people.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

Twist Events is more than just a bartending and hospitality business; it’s a commitment to crafting exceptional experiences that leave a lasting impact on our clients. At the heart of our success is a talented team dedicated to providing unparalleled service at every event. The passion and expertise they bring to the table set us apart, ensuring that each client’s experience exceeds expectations.

The journey to where Twist Events stands today has been far from easy, but it has been undeniably worth it. Celebrating small victories and reflecting on our growth journey have been instrumental in shifting perspectives during challenging times. Recognizing that every event and every client is a privilege has been a guiding principle, motivating us to showcase what sets Twist Events apart in the competitive landscape of the hospitality world.

Investing in my team, brand, and business has been a crucial lesson learned along the way. Hosting our first team mixer in November was a testament to this commitment, providing a platform to appreciate the incredible year we had. The mixer, featuring a Bloody Mary and Mimosa Bar, Brunch, Masseuse, Photo Shoot, Cocktail Class, Gift Bags, and a donation to the Grace Center of Hope in Pontiac, was an opportunity to bring the team together to celebrate our accomplishments. I am immensely proud of the collaborative spirit that defines Twist Events, and this mixer was a reflection of our shared success.

In an industry saturated with similar services, what makes Twist Events different is our commitment to going the extra mile for our clients. While others provide comparable services, we stand out by consistently exceeding expectations in every possible way. It’s not just about meeting requirements; it’s about anticipating needs and delivering a level of service that leaves a lasting impression.

My foundation in hosting events comes from learning from the best—my family. Growing up, our house was a hub of entertainment for family and friends, imparting valuable lessons on gracious hosting. This upbringing has played a pivotal role in shaping the host that I am today, especially when working for Twist Events.

What I want the world to know about Twist Events is that we are more than a brand; we are a story of dedication, passion, and a team that strives for excellence. Twist Events is synonymous with a commitment to creating extraordinary moments that stand out in a world filled with options.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Moving to Detroit was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and I love showing people around the city. Detroit is a unique blend of culture, culinary excellence, thriving music and arts scene, and the passionate sports culture that defines the city. As the owner of Twist Events, I’ve had the privilege of experiencing Detroit’s rich hospitality firsthand.

One of the things that continually impresses me is the caliber of mixologists, bartenders, and servers in the city. Their dedication to their craft elevates the hospitality scene in Detroit, making it a hub for those who appreciate exceptional service and ambient environments. From the innovative cocktails at places like Sugar House, Candy Bar, Time Will Tell, and Kiesling to the laid back vibes at Northern Lights, Motor City Wine, or Old Miami captures the essence of Detroit’s unpretentious yet inviting atmosphere. It’s a reminder that the city has spaces for everyone, regardless of taste or preference.

Exploring Detroit’s culinary landscape is an adventure in itself. From the gourmet experiences at SheWolf or Le Supreme to sliders at Green Dot Stables or grilled cheeses at Cafe D’Mongos, each restaurant encapsulates the city’s diverse flavors and commitment to culinary excellence. Places like Basan, Zuzu, Takoi, and Barda not only serve exceptional food but also create unique atmospheres that reflect the city’s creativity. The city’s historic neighborhoods and charm are also something I admire. The Ghost Bar in The Whitney and London Chop House, with their timeless ambiance, transport you to a different era, offering a glimpse into Detroit’s rich history.

Detroit’s music scene is a testament to the city’s soul, especially venues like Marble Bar, El Club, TV Lounge, Magic Stick, or Big Pink. I join my siblings and friends every Memorial Day Weekend at Hart Plaza for Movement Music Festival, an event that reminds you that Movement is a marathon, not a sprint. It’s not just about the performances but the energy that fills these spaces, making each night out a true experience.

And, of course, I can’t overlook the dedication of Detroit sports and its passionate fanbase. Whether it’s cheering on the Tigers at Comerica Park, supporting the Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena, or enjoying a game at Ford Field, the sports culture in Detroit is a vital part of the city’s heartbeat.

The reasons I love this city are numerous, and my favorite spots could fill pages, so a short visit might just be a teaser. However, if you ever find yourself in need of recommendations for a delectable dinner spot, a spot to savor expertly crafted cocktails, or a place to catch live music in the heart of Detroit, you know where to find me.

Since the launch of Twist Events, my younger sister, Sydni, has been consistently by my side, eagerly diving into action since working our very first event together—a lively holiday party hosted in a mattress store. More than just a sibling, she is my dearest confidante and a mirror of my personality, often referred to as my “mini-me.” Her involvement is not only familial but a vital part of the story, contributing immeasurable value to the shared journey of our business endeavors.

Teta Kelly and Aunt Carol, my role models, embody not only wellsprings of inspiration but also invaluable contributors to the Twist Events family.
