We had the good fortune of connecting with Cheyenne Kisselburg and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cheyenne, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Being a hairdresser, the most important factor that I believe that has helped lead to my success is my ability to listen to others. When somebody sits in my chair, it can be a vulnerable position for them. My goal is to always listen to what my clients have to say and respect their wishes and concerns to give them the best outcome. At the end of the day, I just wanna make people feel good about themselves.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am able to turn peoples hair into my walking billboard for my art. What excites me about what I do is every day is different than the next. No head of hair is the same, no two people are the same. I am able to help people express their beauty through my creativity when someone sits in my chair.
For the longest time, I was unsure of what I wanted to do. I just knew I wanted to make people feel good. One day I made an impromptu visit to a cosmetology school and during that tour I instantly knew I was where I needed to be. Cosmetology school can be pretty intensive and overwhelming, while trying to graduate I was also working full-time. It felt like it took forever but it was definitely worth it.
Something I think is worth knowing, is that being a hairdresser is more than just doing hair. You build relationships with people, you get to know about them and their lives on a deeper level than a lot of other careers. When somebody knows that you care and listen to them, you are able to make a relationship that can last a lifetime.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Ypsilanti and work in Ann Arbor. There’s so much to do when it comes to both places. I am always on the hunt for a new restaurant to try out and when you go downtown, there are endless options of places to try. Aside from the food there are so many cute shops to venture into. There are also so many nature trails around the area that are worth checking out. The university has some beautiful museums that are a must on the list of places to see. Between Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor you could easily fill your week with something new to do every day.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I definitely have a few people to thank when it comes to the success of my career. Starting with my mom and dad, they have always been my biggest supporters and always will be. They have always pushed me to do my best but in a supportive loving way.

Second would be my younger sister Savannah. I always want to be a role model for her, especially in this career. She followed in my footsteps of becoming a cosmetologist and I want to be able to show her that anything is possible when you put your mind to it.

When I first graduated beauty school, I was lucky enough to find a job very quickly at a Karin and Company Salon, and I ended up with two amazing mentors (Karin and Hailey) who have helped grow me into the stylist I am. The knowledge I have learned from them about this career has helped better me behind the chair.

Last but not least I would like to thank my Fiancé James for always giving me love and encouragement to get to where I am. This career can be very emotionally draining some days and he has always been there to help pick me up on the days I need it most.
