We had the good fortune of connecting with Crown Jewelz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Crown, what do you want your legacy to be?
Well first and foremost, I’m an artist and a dreamer but I’m also chronically ill so this question means a lot to me. I want to leave behind a legacy of genuine appreciation for the human spirit. I want people to embrace the essence of what it means to be a human with all of our flaws and silly perceived shortcomings.

I rap about characters to help heal the inner child, let adults know that we can still play and let kids know that it’s okay to listen to rap that’s fun that doesn’t glorify drugs, sex and violence you know all the typical things rap music consists of.

By just enjoying songs based off the characters they love and letting their guards down the subconscious mind can receive healing with music that makes them feel good and happy, making them nostalgic. Humans are multidimensional just like characters so it’s fun making theme songs and bringing those characters to life!

I want people to know we can still create works of art regardless of life’s circumstances and let our higher selves shine through in our daily lives. Always create in times of light and darkness and let it be therapy for you. Your art may inspire others. I know this because every song I’ve ever created has been art therapy for my mind and soul.

The music and instruments soothe any pain or disharmony I may feel while writing my thoughts out help me get through another day. The support I receive from my fans mean the world to me and they remind me how much my music means to them. It keeps me going.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been writing and rapping since I was 14 years old. I started off writing songs in poetry format. Back then I really stood out when I started rapping because not many females were rapping. I wouldn’t say it was easy but it wasn’t really hard until I became chronically ill. I was always ambitious trying to get people to hear me. I used to burn my own cds and pass them out to people during car shows at Belle isle. I knew people with sweet cars would play music loud so I saw a marketing opportunity there. I performed at open mics here and there. I was always motivated to succeed.

Music has always been the most important thing in my life. I always knew I wanted to create music and make art for people to appreciate. When I got sick things just slowed down rapidly and that dream just seemed less likely. I never gave up hope though and I never stopped rapping or writing songs.

When I didn’t have access to a studio I would record in my bedroom on my laptop just to hear how the song would sound because I was so excited about music! Just hearing my voice on a beat made my day. A few lessons I learned a long the way is just to never give up life is hard we go through rough patches but keep trying keep striving for greatness and keep chasing your dreams eventually you will catch them!

I want people to know that every time they hear me rap that I’m giving it my all. Every song I make whether it’s based off a character or real life I make for a reason just to give you guys all of me. Every part of me as a human, the goofy silly me, the sad me, the hurt me, the thought provoking conscious me etc. My brand Crown Jewelz represents higher consciousness and always being authentically yourself.
