We had the good fortune of connecting with Kimberly Lavon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kimberly, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I started my business, my thought process revolved around solving a problem that I, and many others, had experienced—keeping sketchbooks secure without damaging them. As an artist and designer, I knew the frustration of notebooks and sketchbooks becoming disorganized or damaged without proper closure, especially for books that didn’t come with built-in elastic bands like Moleskine journals. This inspired me to create Pad Tie, a practical, creative solution for a niche need.

Another driving factor was the desire for independence. I wanted to take control of my career, apply my creativity, and build something from the ground up that was authentically mine. Having worked in various industries, I also saw how undervalued creative professionals often are, so starting my own business allowed me to ensure fair value and respect for my work.

Ultimately, it was about merging passion, problem-solving, and entrepreneurship in a way that aligned with my vision for a better product and a more fulfilling career.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is deeply rooted in printmaking, graphic design, and the exploration of identity, particularly as a proud Chicana. What sets me apart is my ability to blend traditional techniques with contemporary themes, creating pieces that resonate on both personal and cultural levels. I draw inspiration from my experiences, challenges, and the stories of those around me, infusing my work with a sense of resilience and authenticity.

One of my proudest achievements has been the creation of Pad Tie, my innovative book band that keeps sketchbooks secure. It not only reflects my artistic vision but also serves a practical purpose for fellow artists and creators. I’m excited about the potential of Pad Tie to grow and evolve, especially as I explore collaborations and expand its reach in the art community.

Getting to where I am today has been anything but easy. I’ve faced significant challenges, including discrimination, undervaluation of my work, and the pressure of navigating a competitive industry. To overcome these hurdles, I focused on building my skills, seeking mentorship, and cultivating a strong network of support. The lessons I’ve learned along the way emphasize the importance of perseverance, staying true to my vision, and finding strength in my community.

I want the world to know that my brand represents not just a product but a movement towards valuing creativity and individuality. I believe in the power of art to inspire change and foster connection. My journey is a testament to resilience, and I hope to encourage others to pursue their passions unapologetically, embracing their unique stories along the way.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my closest friends were visiting me today, I would plan an exciting week-long food tour that showcases the best of our local culinary scene. Here’s how I would break it down:

• Evening: Visit a brewery or wine bar to relax and share stories over drinks.

Day 6: Farewell Brunch

Throughout the week, we’d also explore local shops, art installations, and cultural landmarks, making sure to soak in the spirit of the area and create lasting memories together. This itinerary would not only be delicious but also celebrate the community and connections that make this place special.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my friend Marc. We connected over our mutual love of art and food a long time ago, but life took us in different directions for a while, and I thought that separation would be permanent. To my surprise, I was wrong. The universe brought us back together recently, and for that, I’ll be forever grateful. We’ve picked up where we left off, adding beautiful new chapters to our story. I’m so happy to have him back in my life and excited to explore what our creative future holds.
