Meet Davine, Alexis, & Holly Calkins, Baldwin, & Baldwin | Co-owners of The 490 Bakery and The Gooleyguk Cafe

We had the good fortune of connecting with Davine, Alexis, & Holly Calkins, Baldwin, & Baldwin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Davine, Alexis, & Holly, what do you want people to remember about you?
The 490 Bakery and The Gooleyguk Cafe both want a legacy that improves the surrounding community, provides hope and encouragement, and makes people feel loved and valued.
The 490 Bakery: “Our greatest vision to be a business that makes a long standing impact in our community, providing employment and mentoring to men and women returning home from incarceration.”
The Gooleyguk Cafe: “We want people to feel a sense of comfort as soon as they walk in, and that they know they are valued and seen. We want people to remember how they felt when they left our space, whether they just got their favorite drink or they felt comfortable sharing something personal with us.”
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We all come varying backgrounds, and we’re proud of the fact that we all came together to make this dream a reality! It took a lot of time, work, and patience to navigate the communication and compromise required to create two separate businesses that share a vision and a physical space. Each one of us brings a specific skillset that keeps us growing, stretching, and expanding, and we each contribute something unique to the businesses. It’s not always easy to be humble and positive in entrepreneurship, so we’re really proud of how much we’ve all grown together.
Our brands are both about serving others, so hopefully we practice what we preach as much as we can!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We love being located in the Lakeside area and we recommend it to anyone coming to Muskegon! There’s great food, fun shopping, a beautiful bike/walking trail, and lovely places to stay! The beach is a necessity, of course. We also love to suggest the Art Museum, the LST, The Hackley and Hume houses. Muskegon has a quickly growing food scene and we’d recommend most places!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We want to shoutout each other for all being in this together, the Lakeside community of Muskegon, our families for being so supportive and helpful, 490 Bakery volunteers who dedicate time to creating quality cookies, Fresh Coast Alliance, Hope Project, Aldea Coffee for their continued support and training, Refutea, and many more!
