Meet Dr. Garen Wolff, MD | Chief Physician of Wolff Allergy and Asthma in Detroit

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Garen Wolff, MD and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Garen, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Wolff Allergy and Asthma in Detroit was started because of the severe need of Allergist-Immunologist in the city of Detroit. The burden of asthma and allergies falls disproportionately on people living in Detroit. The decision between opening my own business versus being employed was an easy one. I enjoy the autonomy and the ability to practice evidenced based medicine on my own terms. Additionally, I have been able to design unique programs like WolffWeightLoss, which is a holistic weight loss program; and Breathe, a program that incorporates allergy shots for the treatment of seasonal allergies. Entrepreneurship is not foreign to me. It has been integral throughout my life. My father owned his own Internal Medicine practice for 38 years, while my mother owned a Kumon Franchise for more than fifteen years! In high school, I started my own non-profit organization, CityPrep Mentoring program. My non-profit was in existence for 10 years! Opening Wolff Allergy and Asthma in Detroit was a natural transition for me.

What should our readers know about your business?
Wolff Allergy and Asthma in Detroit is the premier Allergy-Immunology practice in Midtown Detroit. I listen to all patients with compassion and create a personalized treatment plan. My goal is to help kids and adults get relief from allergy asthma, sinus, food, and immune system conditions. Wolf Allergy and Asthma in Detroit is proud to provide unique programs: WolffWeightLoss, comprehensive weight loss program; BREATHE treats environmental/seasonal allergies with allergy shots; and JUMPSTART, the only peanut introduction program for infants and toddlers in the state of Michigan.

Perseverance continues to be my mantra. Building Wolff Allergy and Asthma in Detroit from scratch has been no easy feat. However, I networked with other physicians and community leaders to bring significant exposure to my office. Since opening, I have been interviewed as an expert on PBS, CBS Detroit and given talks for organizations such as the NAACP. Additionally, I continue to see new patients every day!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Due to my medical training, I have lived and interviewed in many cities across the United States. However, there is nowhere quite as wonderful as home. My home is the city of Detroit. There are many reasons to love this city. We are both Motown and Motorcity. One of the aspects I appreciate about Detroit is its multitude of diverse neighborhoods and cultural areas. If a friend was visiting Detroit, I would first take them roller skating at Campus Martius. It is a re-established park in Downtown Detroit used for skating, shopping, movie watching and concerts. Second, we would shop for fresh fruit and baked goods at the Eastern Market. Many farmers and small business owners sell homemade dishes or crops at this market. Interestingly, the Eastern Market is the largest open air flower market in the United States Third, we would explore restaurants in Greektown. Fourth, we could take a relaxing stroll around Belle Isle, a manmade island attached to Downtown Detroit by a wonderful bridge.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shout out is not for just one person. I truly believe that it takes a village. My journey throughout medical school and residency was heavily supported by a multitude of family members, faculty and friends. Opening Wolff Allergy and Asthma in Detroit was a significant endeavor, from marketing to networking with community leaders and physician colleagues. I leaned on my faith in God, family members, faculty and friends for assistance. Each played different roles in supporting Wolff Allergy and Asthma in Detroit.
