Meet Erin Moore | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Erin Moore and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erin, why did you pursue a creative career?
I always had a love for photography and being creative. It’s been a dream of mine to be a photographer since I could remember. I actually wrote a paper on my “dream career” when I was in fifth grade. As I got older, I still loved taking photos but I hated the thought of being in a competitive, unreliable career. After eventually falling into photography as a full time job, I found that it doesn’t have to be competitive if you don’t let it. Most of my nearest friends are also photographers in town. I love this little community we’ve created. One of the best decisions I’ve made was following my dreams to be a photographer.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I feel like what sets me apart from others is my realness. I like to keep it simple and treat my clients as friends (which they truly become) and I always want the best for my friends. I want their wedding day to go smoothly, I want them to look and feel their best and I want to capture exactly how they felt on one of the biggest days of their life. I try to imagine what kind of poses they would naturally do or feel most comfortable in. Everyone and every love story is different though. So what makes a good photographer is getting to know your clients as much as possible and then being able to read them. Like knowing if they are the mushy kind of couple or more invert sweet words kind of couple. Knowing this about your client, will help to be able to capture their best selves.
I’ve been in photography for 14 years now and I’m still learning and growing each year. I was 18 when I started taking photography seriously. I worked endless amount of hours under amazing photographers. Soaked in all their knowledge they offered me. Sorted and edited for photographers, to only be paid in lessons. I took hundreds of thousands of photos of everything, everywhere. I made lots of mistakes, learned how to fix them. Figured out how to start and run a business. Made more mistakes and learned how to fix them. It’s really bizarre for me to look back and think about how many weddings I’ve witnessed, how many people I’ve met, all the good times and hard times. But I’m so grateful for every moment I’ve had behind my camera.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a huge advocate for Muskegon, MI and I’m so proud of what our town has become.
First things first, the beach. There’s nothing that will make you feel as freeing then being at our miles of lakefront. Of course you’d be thirsty and hungry after hours of soaking up the sun. So we’d head straight to The Deck, which is right at Pere Maquette beach. There we could listen to daily, live music and eat the best nachos.
After a night of fun, I’d recommend staying at a fantastic Airbnb in downtown Muskegon. Check out 585 Clay Rentals! My friend Brooklyn Seifert designed this beauty!
Downtown, the possibilities are endless! There’s so many food options and fun bars to check out. Bonus points- you are able to walk around downtown with a drink in your hand! During the summer, Muskegon has tons of festivals, an outdoor farmers market and so many outdoor nature parks to check out. You can’t go wrong with whatever you decide to do here!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I owe everything to my photographer role models, Ben Pancoast and Brittney Romeo (430Studios). I looked up to them so much and they were the reason photography was even on my radar. They took me under their wings and I’m forever grateful.
I also have to give a shoutout to my very first clients that were my guinea pigs. They trusted me, raved about my work and spread my name around town. I hope they know I would be nowhere without them. People in Muskegon are the best and so supportive.
Last but not least, I would shoutout my parents. Big thanks to them for letting me skip college and live in their house while I trying to make a name for myself. I don’t think I would’ve taken this route if they had an ounce of doubt in me. And my husband, who has always been my biggest cheerleader and my kids, who are now my new guinea pigs for all my crazy photo ideas. Can’t thank them enough!
