We had the good fortune of connecting with Halie Gary and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Halie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Fun Fact: My mom is the reason I started Boum Boom. Back while attending graduate school I found cool ways to make gifts for people. I made my mom a cosmetic bag as a gift which then turned into individuals asking for bags to be made for them. Once I found ways to make cosmetic bags effectively, the list of products began to increase and from that point my business was in full effect. It’s been 4 years since I’ve started Boum Boom, and I’ve grown past just selling bags to adding accessories, and apparel. I just released my first few pairs of shoes as well! My main thought process was enjoying the ability to make things that I would wear and represent. Boum Boom has something for the nerds, Kpop fans, Detroit born, and many more!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
While having my own business, I still make sure to create digital art in my spare time. I enjoy creating portraits, and being apart of “draw this is in your style” challenges. I can say that I am proud of a few things such as having some celebrities repost and share my art, creating stage art for musicians, as well as being hired as a brand artist to help add the visions of other people to their small businesses or brands. I still don’t feel that I have reached a professional level, but I do hope to be known as a brand/digital artist in the future. I want people to be able to look at my artwork and know it belongs to Halie G. I want the world to know that I’m here, and watch out for me. In no time, I’ll be the brand that you’ll want to see.
One lesson is that you have to be open to working with anyone. Even If the request sounds too difficult, you should give it a try. Be kind, be open, and be willing to push yourself creatively. Plus be strong, you should be paid for your work and by your terms!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Okay, so I’m a Detroit girl through and through who likes to mix extravagant, with low brow adventures. One amazing thing is that Detroit has been growing with cool restaurants, events, and pop ups. Some of my favorite food places are Grandma Bobs, Eatori Market, Kpot, Ford’s Garage, and Ima. I’m a movie goer so a trip to Emagine has to be a stop, with Detroit Bubble Tea being my refreshment to end a long day. There’s axe throwing at Detroit Axe, or seeing a Lions, Red Wings, Tigers, or Pistons game! Concerts are a must so checking out the popular and underground scene is a great choice, but the main event would be sitting by the water at the River Walk waving to Canada!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I definitely have a community of people who has supported and constantly given me the encouragement needed to be great. My mother, god mother, family and friends are all very important to me and has constantly pushed me to continue growing and expanding to the best of my ability.
