Meet Hannah Moore | Documentary Lifestyle & Wedding Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Hannah Moore and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hannah, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’ve always carried a camera around with me to capture photos or short films of random things I appreciate because it seems like all of those insignificant moments are the ones that go undocumented. Those are, nevertheless, the very elements that contribute so much to our happiness. The artistic aspects of photography are what I first fell in love with. As photographers, we appreciate the artistic value that is in photography because it allows us to express and bring out the beauty in front of us. To me, the movement and composition of a photo are what piece a story together. My style of creating is very candid and documentary-based, and I love to capture the little moments that you don’t even see happen. Documenting the important, intimate moments in people’s lives brings me joy, and succeeding at bringing their personality out in a photograph makes me so proud. Through my business, I’ve documented engagements, weddings, seniors and family photos, and it brings me such a sense of pride and fulfillment to know that my art and my skills leave my clients with timeless keepsakes.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When I was in high school, I developed an interest in photography. With a little help from online courses and shooting regularly, I learned just how much could be captured within a single frame – and how natural it was to me. I was stoked because photography gave me the ability to capture the world around me and the memories I was making. It was later that I truly found the true beauty in each photo I was able to capture. I started with portraits, then discovered my love for couples, which then turned into shooting their engagements, then to their bridals and then eventually shooting their wedding day. Starting out, I had unrealistic expectations about how long it would take to actually get going. Learning how to use a camera, control lighting, and edit is hard enough, but turning that into a successful full time business is an entirely different challenge altogether. For me, being an entrepreneur has involved experimenting a lot to see what worked and what didn’t when running a business. One of the biggest things I have learned working in this industry is that not everyone will like your work and that’s okay! It does not mean you have to change the way you do things to make people happy. Photography is a form of art and you should find clients that value your work. Don’t sell yourself short or try to be someone else because you think it will make you successful! It takes time to get going so don’t give up after a couple of months when it’s slow. We just never hear about the photographer who worked on their business for 5 slow years because those stories aren’t very captivating. But they happen the most often.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my friend’s in town then we’d most likely start the morning with coffee and muffins from Aldea located in Grand Haven and head over to the beach to watch the waves crash. Then we would make our way to Holland and climb at Scrapyard. This climbing gym is really a hidden gem in Holland, and the city is very fortunate to have such a great climbing gym so close to downtown. While it may be a relatively small gym, Scrapyard has a lot of variety and a great climbing community that keeps people coming back. Afterwards, we would visit all the shops right downtown Holland and some favorites are Spring Sweet, The Outpost, and Gezellig Home and Garden.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My biggest supporter from the very beginning is my grandpa. He inspired me into pursuing photography and pushed me to start my business even when it seemed scary at the time. He was a fulltime wedding photographer back in the day, so we both shared the same love for photography. We would always be geeking out over camera gear before family dinners and sharing knowledge over a cup of coffee. I have grown so much as a person since starting this business since he pushed me to do it!
