Meet Ma’jenaya Johnson | Community advocate and activist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ma’jenaya Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ma’Jenaya, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success is undoubtably my faith, the lord not only gave me the vision for my business but continues to show me he is at the head of it.
What should our readers know about your business?
First off, very good questions, if I had to say, the thing that sets me apart from a lot of other organizations would be the authenticity, I am a very transparent person and I’m proud to say my business reflects that. Here at MJ3 we’ve truly taken the time to deep dive into ourselves and each on of our employees to discover what advocacy and service means to them and what challenges they will personally face as people of lived experience. As a company we care not only about servicing our communities but also about healing and nurturing our staff. I believe that is why my business has earned the respect of others because it is not at all easy to do, but its definitely worth it, this approach to social work/services strengthens us as an organization but gives hope to our participants. The greatest lesson I’ve learned along the way would be to slow down, things that are not rushing last, taking the time to ask the hard questions and create connection is essential to the work we do without it we’d become/perpetuate the very things we despise. If I had a gigantic microphone that could spread across the would and deliver one message it would simply be that genuine and unconditional love is not dead and MJ To The Third Power as a brand is doing the internal and external work to make it more accessible.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Because my best friend and I have kids, when she comes to visit we typically do family-friendly activities like skating at Northland or Detroit Roller wheels, Stemville downtown and any where that serves chicken tenders and fries.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to give a very special shout out to my best friend and lead consultant for the LGBTQIA+ sector, Bin Userkaf, he’s been there for MJ3 when it was just a thought from trekking through snow storms to help personally deliver invitations and donation letters, keeping my 3 year old entertained so I could work and talking me of the ledge when work began to consume me.. or at least it felt like it would. He has always reminded me who I am and encouraged me to be who I dream of being in the most gentle, honest and vulnerable way(s), without him there would be no MJ To the Third Power.
