Meet Marqus Anthony | Rapper, Businessman & Minister

We had the good fortune of connecting with Marqus Anthony and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marqus, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m from Metro Detroit. I grew up moving around a lot, up and down Gratiot from 8 Mile to 21 Mile. Being on the border of Detroit’s east side I grew up around a lot of hard working people. I grew up in neighborhoods that were predominantly black. My stepdad was also black so I grew up with two amazing mixed sisters. Their side of the family raised me a lot because my biological father hasn’t been involved in my life since I was a child. All of this caused me to be quite different from your typical white boy for my entire life and I’m grateful to be who I am.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been a Christian Hip Hop artist for about 10 years now. Although many people have tried to tell me that I wouldn’t make it anywhere trying to do Christian Rap, here we are still pushing a decade later. Thank God! I’ve been blessed to perform in 15 states, be on TV, radio and in magazines. My music has been streamed over 1.5 million times in over 200 countries! I wanted to quit several times, but the Lord just wouldn’t let me! I know the best is yet to come. The biggest lesson is just to keep going for real. I’ve grown so much as an artist that I’ve gotten better than I ever thought I’d be. Another key is to listen to those who constructively criticize and receive help. We all need it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Definitely gotta hit the river walk to show them how beautiful Detroit is. I would take to them to get pizza at Buddy’s or Shield’s for sure and put them on Detroit style pizza. The DIA is an incredible spot to go as well to see the Diego Rivera murals. Also gotta hit a coney for sure. And Eastern Market too!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my mama. I wouldn’t be who I am without her. She’s always had my back and I’m forever grateful.
