We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Huff and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarah, what’s the most difficult decision you’ve ever had to make?
In 2020, the world was in turmoil as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted lives and businesses everywhere. For many small business owners, the choices were stark: close your doors and risk losing everything or push back against the mandates in an effort to survive. As the owner of Ardor+Grit Salon in Holland, Michigan, I found myself at a crossroads that would test my resolve, my values, and my commitment to both my team and my clients.

When Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued the “Stay Home Stay Safe” order in March 2020, I was compelled to close Ardor+Grit Salon. The following weeks were some of the most challenging of my career. My salon wasn’t just a business; it was a community hub, a place of comfort and beauty for many, and a livelihood for myself and my employees. I knew that without revenue, the survival of my salon was at risk. As the closure stretched from weeks into months, I had to confront the harsh reality that the financial burdens were mounting, and I might lose everything I had built.

The most difficult decision I faced was whether to reopen the salon in defiance of the state orders. On May 15, 2020, after two months of closure, I decided to take that risk and opened Ardor+Grit Salon by myself. No employees joined me; this was a decision I had to make alone. The fear of legal repercussions weighed heavily on me, but so did the fear of losing my business entirely. Shortly after reopening, I received a letter from the Ottawa County prosecutor warning of potential violations, which added to the uncertainty and stress.

Despite the legal threats, I felt that I had to make my voice heard, not just for my business but for all small business owners who were struggling. On May 20, I participated in “Operation Haircut,” a protest held on the lawn of the Michigan State Capitol. There, I gave haircuts to willing participants in defiance of the executive orders. It wasn’t just an act of civil disobedience; it was a statement that our voices mattered, that small business owners should not be overlooked in the midst of this crisis.

The consequences were swift. I was cited by the Michigan State Police for violating the orders, and within days, both the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) and local police visited my salon. I was facing potential enhanced penalties, legal battles, and the possibility of losing my professional license. My decision to reopen and participate in the protest was not without risks, but I felt it was necessary to stand up for what I believed in. My actions were rooted in the belief that I had to do everything I could to save my business and support my community.

By October 2020, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled against Governor Whitmer’s emergency orders, and the misdemeanor charges against me were dropped. While this was a relief, the stress, anxiety, and uncertainty I faced during those months remain vivid in my memory. The pending complaints with LARA served as a reminder that my fight wasn’t completely over.

Looking back, that decision to reopen Ardor+Grit Salon and to participate in “Operation Haircut” was the most difficult decision of my life. It required balancing my commitment to my business and community with the potential consequences of defying state mandates. In the end, it was about standing up for what I believed was right and ensuring that small business owners like myself had a voice. It was a test of courage and conviction, and while it was not easy, it defined who I am as a business owner and a person.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

What Am I Most Proud Of or Excited About?

I am most proud of the culture and community we’ve built at Ardor + Grit. Being recognized as the best salon on the Lakeshore for lived-in hair color and hair extensions is a testament to the passion, talent, and hard work of our incredible team. I’m especially excited about our signature service, the Lakeshore Blonde, which has become synonymous with our brand. It’s not just a hair color; it’s an experience that blends artistry, technique, and an understanding of each guest’s unique needs.

The joy of seeing clients leave our salon not just looking beautiful but feeling empowered and rejuvenated is what keeps me excited every single day. Our goal is not only to create beautiful hairstyles but also to uplift and inspire everyone who walks through our doors.

How Did I Get to Where I Am Today Professionally?

The journey to where I am today has been anything but easy. Building Ardor + Grit into what it is now required resilience, determination, and faith. The path has been filled with challenges—like navigating the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic when we had to make difficult decisions to keep the business alive. During that time, I had to rely on my inner strength, the support of my loved ones, and my faith in God to guide me through.

The decision to participate in “Operation Haircut” was one such challenge where I had to stand firm for what I believed was right for my business, even when faced with legal and regulatory repercussions. The experience taught me the importance of standing up for my values and the people who depend on me.

How Did I Overcome the Challenges?

Challenges have been a constant in my journey, but I’ve learned that they often come with lessons that lead to growth. Overcoming these obstacles required a mix of perseverance, adaptability, and leaning on the incredible support system I have—my family, friends, and community, who always believed in me even when the path was unclear. My faith has been a guiding light, reminding me that even in the darkest times, there is always hope and a way forward.

I also focused on maintaining a positive mindset and embracing the idea that every setback is an opportunity to learn and improve. The pandemic, for example, pushed me to reimagine how Ardor + Grit could serve our clients in new and innovative ways while still providing the luxury and care they’ve come to expect from us.

Lessons I’ve Learned Along the Way

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the value of staying true to your vision and values, no matter how tough the journey gets. It’s about creating something bigger than yourself, something that genuinely touches and improves people’s lives. I’ve learned that authenticity, passion, and a relentless commitment to quality are the keys to building a brand that resonates deeply with people.

I’ve also learned the power of community—both within my team and with our clients. Building a salon isn’t just about the services we offer; it’s about creating a place where people feel seen, valued, and uplifted. That sense of community and belonging is at the heart of everything we do at Ardor + Grit.

What I Want the World to Know About Me and Ardor + Grit

I want the world to know that Ardor + Grit is not just a salon; it’s a movement—a commitment to empowering others to embrace their beauty and feel their best. Our story is one of grit, grace, and growth, fueled by a deep passion for serving our community and creating a space where everyone feels loved and valued. I am incredibly proud of what we’ve built and even more excited about what the future holds.

Our journey is a testament to the power of resilience, faith, and an unwavering commitment to uplifting and inspiring those around us. To everyone who has supported us along the way, thank you. Together, we continue to grow, thrive, and make a lasting impact.
