Meet Abigail Hohman | Metalsmith & Herbalist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Abigail Hohman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Abigail, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born and raised in Michigan, in a very small rural town. My great grandfather settled there after leaving Germany, in a beautiful farmhouse that would be handed down to my grandfather and father. Growing up there, I ran wild in my grandfather’s cornfields, dug my hands deep into soil, and enjoyed the company of many animals – so my childhood was anything but a boring one.
I went through a rebellious phase where I felt I had outgrown my background until a few years into my metalsmithing journey, I noticed an undercurrent of inspiration within my craft. Much of what I wanted to create felt reminiscent of my roots.
To this day, I am joyfully impacted by where I came from. In every sense of the word, I am shaped by who and where I come from and do my best to capture that in my offerings.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am the hands and heart behind The Mystic Metalsmith, the creative container for all of my offerings. Within my space, you’ll find adornment crafted with recycled precious metals and ethically sourced gemstones, sustainably wildcrafted herbal apothecary items, food & remedy recipes, and more – all rooted in ancestral heritage, mythology & folklore, re-claiming traditional skills being forgotten in our modern society, and a connection to nature.
As you can probably tell, the work that I do is very niche. I used to think that I had to limit myself to one artistic medium, or one offering, so as to not confuse my community. But one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is people want to know you – all of you! The more that I shared about herbalism, ancestral reconnection, and all of my unique interests, the more I found that I naturally attracted people who resonated with every facet of my work!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As a small business, I always aim to support small & local, so you best believe we would be hitting all the hidden gems! Some of my favorite spots I’d take them would be the Bittersweet Cafe in Holly, Hawthorn & Violet herbal apothecary in Fenton, Tinsman Farms Apothecary in Holly, the farmers market, and if it was in late summer/early fall, we would have to hit the Renaissance Festival in Holly!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I truly would not be where I am today without the love and support of so many amazing people. A few dear friends urged me to believe in myself and follow my dreams and I am forever thankful to them for that. Every single person who has purchased a piece of my craft, has shared my business card with their friend, or messaged me to gush over how much they adore a jewel I made them has made an impact on my heart, business, and life! Additionally I’d love to shout out the Artist & Maker community I’ve found a home in – for we thrive when we help our peers grow and thrive as well.
