Perspectives on Risk-Taking

There is a wealth of academic research that suggests that differences in risk appetite are at the heart of differences in career and business trajectories. We wanted to go beyond the theory and ask real people from the community about their perspectives and experiences with risk and risk taking.
I think risk-taking is a fundamental part of my practice. Much of my creative process is born from experimentation. I identify as an interdisciplinary artist, since I am consistently fusing new mediums whenever I have a new idea. A goal of mine within my practice is to possess a diverse range of artistic skills, which enables me to blend them uniquely with each project I undertake. I’m particularly drawn to art that engages risk; it’s the element of surprise that captivates me. I like how taking risks transforms viewers into active participants in the artistic dialogue, provoking thoughts on subjects they might otherwise overlook. Risk, I find, is incredibly motivating. Taking risks is a key element of both of my careers. As founder and owner of my commercial video production and photography studio, taking risks is closely linked with entrepreneurship and my success. Risk-taking is essential to growth. It shows confidence in your brand and your business and often can act as a competitive advantage to your competitors. With risk comes failure as well so you have to be able to accept those failures and learn from them to move forward and not be afraid to continue taking them. Since college I’ve always said ” Do it Scared Anyway.” I’ve never done what was comfortable. When I’m uncomfortable but sure of my decision then I take the leap. This mindset and my faith in God to lead me, is why I’ve had so many successes. Read more>>
Taking the road less traveled or finding your own way is a great leap of faith but also instilled in me from a child to be able to accomplish things and to just figure it out. Tripping and falling along the way is growth. Being determined and inspired to help serve people always helps. Read more>>
Let me begin by saying that I’m largely risk-averse. I’m not a fan of uncertain outcomes, especially when it comes to financial security. I didn’t grow up with many resources, and my mother held multiple jobs to ensure we had everything we needed, so the fear of not being able to provide is something I’m familiar with. In general, I think all people want to feel secure, but sometimes that’s what holds us back from taking risks in our careers. After I finished cosmetology school in 2010, I knew it would take some time to find a salon and build a healthy and sustainable clientele so I found work in higher education. Read more>>
